Daily Prayer

Prayer: Father God we Pray that we will remember that all of our Ancestors came to this Great Country on different Ships, that we all fought together 243 years ago for our Freedom and that we are now ALL in the SAME ship now. That your Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ,  COMMANDED us as He ascended back into Heaven to be with You, to love each other as we do ourselves. Please help us all to remember that You created us all equal, none better than the other in Your Sight, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Whosoever…That includes you!

BIBLE MEDITATION:

“And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely”

(Revelation 22:17)

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

You don’t have to pay one blessed cent for the water of life. Take it and drink freely. You’ll never have your heart’s deepest thirst satisfied until you’re satisfied with Jesus. I promise on the authority of the Word of God, He will save you,

Let’s say Samuel D. Smith, born July 4, 1990, asks, “But Pastor Rogers, what if I’m not one of the ‘elect’? How can I know for sure I’m one of the ‘elect’”?

Would it help Sam to believe he’s one of the elect if Jesus had said here, “Let Sam Smith come and take of the water of life freely”? No, there’s more than one Sam Smith.

What if it said, “Samuel D. Smith”? There might be another Samuel D Smith. It might not refer to our Sam.

What if it said, “Samuel D. Smith, born in Sam’s hometown on July 4, 1990”? There could be another Samuel D. Smith born in his town on July 4, 1990. By now you’re saying, “Adrian, you’re getting ridiculous.”

Let me solve this. Let’s forget all that and just put one word in there: “whosoever.” That’s exactly what it says: “Whosoever will, let him come…” That’s better than anybody’s name spelled out in detail.

Who are the elect? I can settle that in 30 seconds. The elect are the “whosoever wills.”

ACTION POINT:

If you want to be saved, come to Jesus. He’s reaching His nail-pierced hands to you, saying, “Come.” Jesus says come. The Spirit says come. The bride says come. The individual says come. You can come and drink.

The Greatest Thing…

The Greatest thing that ever happened to me was when I realized that GOD forgave me of all my sins through the Death, Burial and Resurrection of His Son, Jesus and through my Faith in Him.”

Daily Devotional: Dr Charles Hadden Spurgeon

August 01

An Appeal; Deliverance
“And call upon Me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify Me”   (Psalm 50:15).

This is a promise indeed!

Here is an urgent occasion — “the day of trouble.” It is dark at noon on such a day, and every hour seems blacker than the one which came before it. Then is this promise in season: it is written for the cloudy day.

Here is condescending advice, “Call upon me.” We ought not to need the exhortation: it should be our constant habit all the day and every day. What a mercy to have liberty to call upon God! What wisdom to make good use of it! How foolish to go running about to men! The LORD invites us to lay our case before Him, and surely we will not hesitate to do so.

Here is reassuring encouragement: “I will deliver thee.” Whatever the trouble may be, the LORD makes no exceptions but promises full, sure, happy deliverance. He will Himself work out our deliverance by His own hand. We believe it, and the LORD honors faith.

Here is an ultimate result: “Thou shalt glorify me.” Ah, that we will do most abundantly. When He has delivered us we will loudly praise Him; and as He is sure to do it, let us begin to glorify Him at once.

David cared for them with pure motives; he led them with skill.  Ps 78:72

When you are doubtful as to your course, submit your judgment absolutely to the Spirit of God, and ask Him to shut against you every door but the right one…Meanwhile keep on as you are, and consider the absence of indication to be the indication of God’s will that you are on His track…As you go down the long corridor, you will find that He has preceded you, and locked many doors which you would fain have entered; but be sure that beyond these there is one which He has left unlocked. Open it and enter, and you will find yourself face to face with a bend of the river of opportunity, broader and deeper than anything you had dared to imagine in your sunniest dreams. Launch forth upon it; it conducts to the open sea.

God guides us, often by circumstances. At one moment the way may seem utterly blocked; and then shortly afterward some trivial incident occurs, which might not seem much to others, but which to the keen eye of faith speaks volumes. Sometimes these things are repeated in various ways, in answer to prayer. They are not haphazard results of chance, but the opening up of circumstances in the direction in which we would walk. And they begin to multiply as we advance toward our goal, just as the lights do as we near a populous town, when darting through the land by night express.
—F. B. Meyer

—Horace Bushnell

As moves my fragile bark across the storm-swept sea,
Great waves beat o’er her side, as north wind blows;
Deep in the darkness hid lie threat’ning rocks and shoals;
But all of these, and more, my Pilot knows.

Sometimes when dark the night, and every light gone out,
I wonder to what port my frail ship goes;
Still though the night be long, and restless all my hours,
My distant goal, I’m sure, my Pilot knows.

What Happens When You Die?

WHEN A CHRISTIAN DIES THEY ARE TAKEN BY ANGELS TO BE WITH JESUS: LUKE 16:22 WHEN AN UNBELIEVER DIES HIS SOUL GOES STRAIGHT TO HADES/HELL: LUKE 16: 22-23.

TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN YOU MUST:

  1. BELIEVE, ON FAITH, JOHN 3:16: THAT GOD SENT HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, JESUS, TO THIS EARTH TO DIE ON THE CROSS AT CALVARY OVER 2,000 YEARS AGO, AS PAYMENT FOR ALL OF YOUR SINS, WAS BURIED IN A BORROWED TOMB, ROSE FROM THE DEAD ON THE 3RD DAY (EASTER) AND ASCENDED BACK INTO HEAVEN TO SIT ON HIS THRONE TO THE RIGHT-HAND OF HIS FATHER GOD AS OUR: HIGH-PRIEST, ADVOCATE, LORD AND SAVIOR;
  2. PRAY TO GOD ADMITTING THAT YOU ARE A SINNER AND THAT YOU REPENT OF THOSE SINS;
  3. ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR, ON FAITH;
  4. THAT YOU ARE MAKING HIM THE LORD OF YOUR LIFE AND ARE GIVING HIM CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE, IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

If you do those 4 things, The Holy Spirit will enter your soul and you will become a Born-Again Christian and have your ticket into Heaven when you die where you will be with all other Christians for Eternity where there is no end!John 14:6 makes it very clear that there is no other way into Heaven.God loves you and He wants you to be with Him in Heaven!But there is a problem: The entire Human Race has been infected with a disease sin when Adam & Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden and there is only one cure for that sin:Jesus Christ.You CANNOT earn your way into Heaven: The Price has already been paid by Christ’s Death on the Cross, kind of like if you were eating at a Restaurant and the Waitress comes by & tells you that someone else picked up your check!I personally am a great sinner,but I have a Great Savior.I beg you to do these 4 things NOW! Those are probably the most important 3 letters in the English language! There may be no tomorrow for you; please accept Christ as your Personal Savior now and KNOW that all of your sins are forgiven and that you will go to Heaven when you die.God Bless you,Bob Lewis, Sinner saved by Grace OurDailyBread101.com Author of this Blog (OurDailyBread101.com) since December, 2011, Vietnam Vet, B52s, Devout Christian, All that I have belongs to Him, I am just a steward. boblewis02@gmail.com

Spurgeon’s Evening Devotional

March 5

Morning …

1 Thessalonians 5:6
Let us not sleep, as do others.

There are many ways of promoting Christian wakefulness. Among the rest, let me strongly advise Christians to converse together concerning the ways of the Lord. Christian and Hopeful, as they journeyed towards the Celestial City, said to themselves, “To prevent drowsiness in this place, let us fall into good discourse.” Christian enquired, “Brother, where shall we begin?” And Hopeful answered, “Where God began with us.” Then Christian sang this song-

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;
Yea, let them learn of them, in any wise,
Thus to keep open their drowsy slumb’ring eyes.
Saints’ fellowship, if it be managed well,
Keeps them awake, and that in spite of hell.”

Christians who isolate themselves and walk alone, are very liable to grow drowsy. Hold Christian company, and you will be kept wakeful by it, and refreshed and encouraged to make quicker progress in the road to heaven. But as you thus take “sweet counsel” with others in the ways of God, take care that the theme of your converse is the Lord Jesus. Let the eye of faith be constantly looking unto Him; let your heart be full of Him; let your lips speak of His worth. Friend, live near to the cross, and thou wilt not sleep. Labour to impress thyself with a deep sense of the value of the place to which thou art going. If thou rememberest that thou art going to heaven, thou wilt not sleep on the road. If thou thinkest that hell is behind thee, and the devil pursuing thee, thou wilt not loiter. Would the manslayer sleep with the avenger of blood behind him, and the city of refuge before him? Christian, wilt thou sleep whilst the pearly gates are open-the songs of angels waiting for thee to join them-a crown of gold ready for thy brow? Ah! no; in holy fellowship continue to watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation.

Sagemont Founding Pastor Dr John Morgan

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

One may ask, “Pastor, why do you passionately believe that Jesus is literally going to return to the earth?”  These are a few reasons:

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

  1.  Jesus said He would!  John 14:3 “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
  2.  The entire Christian view of history demands it.
  3. The prophetic signs found in scripture are now clearly being fulfilled.
  • Earthquakes all over the globe.  Matthew 24:7 – (over 20,000 since 1971)
  • Hearts will fail for fear.  Luke 21:26 –  Suicides are epidemic.
  • Great explosions of learning.  II Timothy 3:7 – People cannot discern the truth.
  • Immorality abounds.  Luke 17:26-27 – Like the days of Noah.

Scripture clearly teaches that Jesus will come to save His children and judge the rest.

Book: God and Churchill

God and Churchill

I have just completed reading one of the best books that I have read in the last twenty years.  God and Churchill, written by one of our newest Sagemont members Jonathan Sandys (pronounced “sands”), great-grandson of Sir Winston Churchill.  Wallace Henley, staff member at Second Baptist Church, Houston, assisted Jonathan in this profound book.  The purpose of the book is to make clear “how the great leader’s sense of divine destiny changed his troubled world and offers help for ours.”  Tyndale Momentum is the publisher.  The book has many profound quotes.  However, there is one that has impacted my life more than many others.  Prime Minister of Great Britain, Margaret Thatcher, addressing the Church of Scotland General Assembly in 1988, said “I think back to many discussions in my early life when we all agreed that if you try to take the fruits of Christianity without its roots, the fruits will wither.  And they will not come back unless you nurture the roots.”

One of the responsibilities of the Bride of Christ, the Church, is to keep Christianity on track and prevent the derailing of His ultimate purpose.  The paganism that is engulfing us today will ultimately destroy us unless we return to the roots of our faith.  “Our faith is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.”  It is on the solid rock we must stand for truly all other ground is sinking sand.

Note:  The book God and Churchill is available in the Sagemont Bookstore.

Favorite Scriptures and Quotations

“Roll on Jehovah thy way” (Ps. 37:6, margin).

Whatever it is that presses thee, go tell the Father; put the whole matter over into His hand, and so shalt thou be freed from that dividing, perplexing care that the world is full of. When thou art either to do or suffer anything, when thou art about any purpose or business, go tell God of it, and acquaint Him with it; yes, burden Him with it, and thou hast done for matter of caring; no more care, but quiet, sweet, diligence in thy duty, and dependence on Him for the carriage of thy matters. Roll thy cares, and thyself with them, as one burden, all on thy God.
R. Leighton

Build a little fence of trust
Around today;
Fill the space with loving work
And therein stay.

Look not through the sheltering bars
Upon tomorrow;
God will help thee bear what comes
Of joy or sorrow.
Mary Butts

We shall find it impossible to commit our way unto the Lord, unless it be a way that He approves. It is only by faith that a man can commit his way unto the Lord; if there be the slightest doubt in the heart that “our way” is not a good one, faith will refuse to have anything to do with it. This committing of our way must be a continuous, not a single act. However extraordinary and unexpected may seem to be His guidance, however near the precipice He may take you, you are not to snatch the guiding reins out of His hands.

Are we willing to have all our ways submitted to God, for Him to pronounce judgment on them? There is nothing a Christian needs to be more scrutinizing about than about his confirmed habits and views. He is too apt to take for granted the Divine approbation of them. Why are some Christians so anxious, so fearful? Evidently because they have not left their way with the Lord. They took it to Him, but brought it away with them again.

Daily Devotional: Dr Adrian Rogers

Love Worth Finding

July 31

You will be known by who you follow!

BIBLE MEDITATION:

“He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor”

(John 12:25-26)

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

You know, sometimes it’s hard to look at a person and know whether they’re saved or not saved. One way to illustrate it is, if a group of people is standing around and there’s a dog in the midst, it’s hard to tell which man that dog belongs to. Let’s say two men are having a conversation, and the dog is sitting on the floor. When the two men part, you’re going to find out who the dog belongs to, because the dog will follow his master, right?

I made up my mind long ago that if a dog can follow his master, I’m going to follow mine. You’ll be known by which master you follow.

In high school, some kids will go this way and Jesus will go a different way, and you’ll go His way because Jesus is your Master.

In business, some men are going to go this way and Jesus is going to go that way. Mr. Christian Businessman, you’ll go that way because Jesus is your Master. You will be known by the Master you follow.

ACTION POINT:

Make it your purpose to do what Jesus said so long ago: “Follow me.”

The Greatest Thing…

The Greatest thing that ever happened to me was when I realized that GOD forgave me of all my sins through the Death, Burial and Resurrection of His Son, Jesus and through my Faith in Him.”

=================================================================

Daily Devotional: Dr Charles Hadden Spurgeon

July 31

Promise of Future Meeting
“l will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice”   (John 16:22).

Surely He will come a second time, and then, when He sees us and we see Him, there will be rejoicings indeed. Oh, for that joyous return! But this promise is being dainty fulfilled in another sense. Our gracious LORD has many “agains” in His dealings with us. He gave us pardon, and He sees us again and repeats the absolving word as fresh sins cause us grief. He has revealed to us our acceptance before God, and when our faith in that blessing grows a little dim, He comes to us again and again and says, “Peace be unto you,” and our hearts are glad.

Beloved, all our past mercies are tokens of future mercies. If Jesus has been with us, He will see us again. Look upon no former favor as a dead and buried thing, to be mourned over; but regard it as a seed sown, which will grow, and push its head up from the dust, and cry, “I will see you again.” Are the times dark because Jesus is not with us as He used to be? Let us pluck up courage; for He will not be long away. His feet are as those of a roe or young hart, and they will soon bring Him to us. Wherefore let us begin to be joyous, since He saith to us even now, “I will see you again.”

Daily Devotional: Streams in the Desert

July 31

For we through the Spirit by faith wait for the hope of righteousness (Galatians 5:5, RV).

There are times when things look very dark to me–so dark that I have to wait even for hope. It is bad enough to wait in hope. A long-deferred fulfillment carries its own pain, but to wait for hope, to see no glimmer of a prospect and yet refuse to despair; to have nothing but night before the casement and yet to keep the casement open for possible stars; to have a vacant place in my heart and yet to allow that place to be filled by no inferior presence–that is the grandest patience in the universe. It is Job in the tempest; it is Abraham on the road to Moriah; it is Moses in the desert of Midian; it is the Son of man in the Garden of Gethsemane. There is no patience so hard as that which endures, “as seeing him who is invisible”; it is the waiting for hope.

Thou hast made waiting beautiful; Thou has made patience divine. Thou hast taught us that the Father’s will may be received just because it is His will. Thou hast revealed to us that a soul may see nothing but sorrow in the cup and yet may refuse to let it go, convinced that the eye of the Father sees further than its own.

I shall reach the climax of strength when I have learned to wait for hope.
–George Matheson

Strive to be one of those–so few–who walk the earth with ever-present consciousness–all mornings, middays, star-times–that the unknown which men call Heaven is “close behind the visible scene of things.”

  1. BELIEVE, ON FAITH, JOHN 3:16: THAT GOD SENT HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, JESUS, TO THIS EARTH TO DIE ON THE CROSS AT CALVARY OVER 2,000 YEARS AGO, AS PAYMENT FOR ALL OF YOUR SINS, WAS BURIED IN A BORROWED TOMB, ROSE FROM THE DEAD ON THE 3RD DAY (EASTER) AND ASCENDED BACK INTO HEAVEN TO SIT ON HIS THRONE TO THE RIGHT-HAND OF HIS FATHER GOD AS OUR: HIGH-PRIEST, ADVOCATE, LORD AND SAVIOR;
  2. PRAY TO GOD ADMITTING THAT YOU ARE A SINNER AND THAT YOU REPENT OF THOSE SINS;
  3. ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR, ON FAITH;

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;

Around today;
Fill the space with loving work
And therein stay.

Look not through the sheltering bars
Upon tomorrow;

You Are Highly Exalted!

BIBLE MEDITATION:

“Two things I request of You (Deprive me not before I die): Remove falsehood and lies far from me. Give me neither poverty nor riches—feed me with the food allotted to me, lest I be full and deny You, and say, “Who is the Lord?” Or lest I be poor and steal, and profane the name of my God”

(Proverbs 30:7-9)

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

You may encounter in this life both the tests of poverty and of riches. If so, the Lord has some advice for you.

See poverty in the proper perspective. In the Lord Jesus Christ, you are highly exalted, no matter how poor you are. Having Christ, you are richer than the richest man on earth without the Lord Jesus. As a Christian, you have gone from rags to riches in Him.

It’s hard to be poor and even harder to be rich. The rich man may have an easier time in life, but he has a harder time passing the test.

The Lord doesn’t tell the rich to renounce their riches but to properly assess them. It’s not wrong to have money. Some of God’s choicest saints—Abraham for example—were wealthy. But the rich are to see their wealth from a proper perspective.

Many people would do better being poor than rich. Some people can stand almost anything but prosperity.

ACTION POINT:

It’s better to have balance, neither wealth nor poverty, but enough food for our daily bread. If we have too much, we may think we don’t need God. If too little, we might be tempted to steal and dishonor the Lord. Remember to thank the Lord today for His daily provision.

July 30

He Routs Our Enemy
“He hath cast out thine enemy”   (Zephaniah 3:15).

What a casting out was that! Satan has lost his throne in our nature even as he lost his seat in heaven. Our LORD Jesus has destroyed the enemy’s reigning power over us. He may worry us, but he cannot claim us as his own. His bonds are no longer upon our spirits: the Son has made us free, and we are free indeed.

Still is the archenemy the accuser of the brethren; but even from this position our LORD has driven him. Our Advocate silences our accuser. The LORD rebukes our enemies and pleads the causes of our soul, so that no harm comes of all the devil’s revilings.

As a tempter, the evil spirit still assails us and insinuates himself into our minds; but thence also is he cast out as to his former preeminence. He wriggles about like a serpent, but he cannot rule like a sovereign. He hurls in blasphemous thoughts when he has opportunity; but what a relief it is when he is told to be quiet and is made to slink off like a whipped cur! LORD, do this for any who are at this time worried and wearied by his barkings. Cast out their enemy, and be Thou glorious in their eyes. Thou hast cast him down; LORD, cast him out. Oh, that Thou wouldst banish him from the world!

“There are many graduates today who expect the corner office with a view, flexible work time, and birthdays off.” The placement counselor was describing some senior students and their expectations upon graduation from the university to the parents of the incoming freshman. She went on to implore parents to stop being their child’s alarm clock, to never call the professors, and quit being the child’s homework proofer (or doer).

Entitlement has gone too far when college graduates are unable to take ownership of their life and work for those office perks.

Are we raising a generation of kids who have unrealistic life expectations? Do they believe they should have what their parents have when they graduate? In our desire to keep our kids happy, perhaps we have shielded them from struggle only to create more problems for them when future difficulties come their way.

We overstep and take over, inhibiting the development of our kids’ perseverance and patience. Many young people leave college unprepared for the adult world. The unbridled, unearned, and insincere positive reinforcement given so freely does more harm than good. It can produce young adults who believe the world revolves around them and think the world owes them.

Here are 10 ways to stop childhood entitlement before it goes too far.

  1. BELIEVE, ON FAITH, JOHN 3:16: THAT GOD SENT HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, JESUS, TO THIS EARTH TO DIE ON THE CROSS AT CALVARY OVER 2,000 YEARS AGO, AS PAYMENT FOR ALL OF YOUR SINS, WAS BURIED IN A BORROWED TOMB, ROSE FROM THE DEAD ON THE 3RD DAY (EASTER) AND ASCENDED BACK INTO HEAVEN TO SIT ON HIS THRONE TO THE RIGHT-HAND OF HIS FATHER GOD AS OUR: HIGH-PRIEST, ADVOCATE, LORD AND SAVIOR;
  2. PRAY TO GOD ADMITTING THAT YOU ARE A SINNER AND THAT YOU REPENT OF THOSE SINS;
  3. ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR, ON FAITH;

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;

Around today;
Fill the space with loving work
And therein stay.

Look not through the sheltering bars
Upon tomorrow;

Have you given God access to every secret closet?

BIBLE MEDITATION:

“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit”

(Ephesians 5:18)

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

To be filled with the Spirit of God means first, repentance, then resistance of the devil, and then renewal. It means there’s not one room in your body, soul, or spirit that’s off-limits to God. There’s not one closet He doesn’t have a key to. It means you are filled with the Spirit in your church life, your business life, your sex life, your political life, and your social life, in the big things and the little things, in your money, exercise, sleep, eating, in your lying down, and in your waking up.

You have a choice: you can grieve the Spirit of God and be filled with the devil, or you can put the devil out and be filled with the Spirit of God.

You give Jesus the keys to it all. Then when you’re filled with the Spirit, there’s no more room for Satan, no place for the devil. Where can the devil go? He has no place. If there’s room for Satan, the Spirit is grieved and you’re not filled with the Spirit.

ACTION POINT:

Repent, resist, renew! Don’t try to repent until you’re honest and face your sin. Don’t try to resist until you’ve repented. And don’t try to be filled until you renew—until you choose against Satan and yield to God’s blessed Holy Spirit.

“Humble yourselves therefore order the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time”   (1 Peter 5:6).

This is tantamount to a promise: if we will bow down, the LORD will lift us up. Humility leads to honor; submission is the way to exaltation. That same hand of God which presses us down is waiting to raise us up when we are prepared to bear the blessing. We stoop to conquer. Many cringe before men and yet miss the patronage they crave; but he that humbles himself under the hand of God shall not fail to be enriched, uplifted, sustained, and comforted by the ever-gracious One. It is a habit of Jehovah to cast down the proud and lift up the lowly.

Yet there is a time for the LORD’s working. We ought now to humble ourselves, even at this present moment; and we are bound to keep on doing so whether the LORD lays His afflicting hand upon us or not. When the LORD smites, it is our special duty to accept the chastisement with profound submission. But as for the LORD’s exaltation of us, that can only come “in due time,” and God is the best judge of that day and hour. Do we cry out impatiently for the blessing? Would we wish for untimely honor? What are we at? Surely we are not truly humbled, or we should wait with quiet submission. So let us do.

But the Storm Swept On!

The Lord hath His way in the whirlwind and storm (Nahum 1:3).

I recollect, when a lad, and while attending a classical institute in the vicinity of Mount Pleasant, sitting on an elevation of that mountain, and watching a storm as it came up the valley. The heavens were filled with blackness, and the earth was shaken by the voice of thunder. It seemed as though that fair landscape was utterly changed, and its beauty gone never to return.

But the storm swept on, and passed out of the valley; and if I had sat in the same place on the following day, and said, “Where is that terrible storm, with all its terrible blackness?” the grass would have said, “Part of it is in me,” and the daisy would have said, “Part of it is in me,” and the fruits and flowers and everything that grows out of the ground would have said, “Part of the storm is incandescent in me.”

Have you asked to be made like your Lord? Have you longed for the fruit of the Spirit, and have you prayed for sweetness and gentleness and love? Then fear not the stormy tempest that is at this moment sweeping through your life. A blessing is in the storm, and there will be the rich fruitage in the “afterward.”
–Henry Ward Beecher

The flowers live by the tears that fall
From the sad face of the skies;
And life would have no joys at all,
Were there no watery eyes.

Love thou thy sorrow: grief shall bring
Its own excuse in after years;
The rainbow!–see how fair a thing
God hath built up from tears.

  1. BELIEVE, ON FAITH, JOHN 3:16: THAT GOD SENT HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, JESUS, TO THIS EARTH TO DIE ON THE CROSS AT CALVARY OVER 2,000 YEARS AGO, AS PAYMENT FOR ALL OF YOUR SINS, WAS BURIED IN A BORROWED TOMB, ROSE FROM THE DEAD ON THE 3RD DAY (EASTER) AND ASCENDED BACK INTO HEAVEN TO SIT ON HIS THRONE TO THE RIGHT-HAND OF HIS FATHER GOD AS OUR: HIGH-PRIEST, ADVOCATE, LORD AND SAVIOR;
  2. PRAY TO GOD ADMITTING THAT YOU ARE A SINNER AND THAT YOU REPENT OF THOSE SINS;
  3. ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR, ON FAITH;

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;

Around today;
Fill the space with loving work
And therein stay.

Look not through the sheltering bars
Upon tomorrow;

You Need Grace First!

BIBLE MEDITATION:

“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord…”

(2 Peter 1:2)

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

Have you ever noticed how God puts things in sequence in the Bible? For example, the Bible says, “Grace and peace be multiplied to you.” It never says “peace and grace”—always “grace and peace.” Why? Because you’ll not know peace until you know grace.

The Bible also says “Believe and be baptized,” not “Be baptized and believe.” The Bible teaches believers’ baptism, “….if you believe with all your heart…” (Acts 8:37)

If you were baptized before you gave your heart to Jesus and truly believed, you haven’t been “baptized” at all. True baptism follows true belief. Believer’s baptism signifies “buried in the likeness of His death. Raised to newness of life.” If you’re baptized before you truly come to know Jesus Christ as Savior, that’s like having your funeral before you die. God’s order is “believe and be baptized.”

That’s not all. Here’s another order God has put in the Bible: repentance and faith, always in that order: repentance first, then faith. If you’re having difficulty with faith, first try repentance.

ACTION POINT:

There’s nothing more debilitating, more smothering to faith, than a sin you’re harboring in your heart. The Bible speaks of a sin “that so easily besets us.” We all have our “besetting sin.” Do you know what it is? Have you confessed it to God and repented from it? If you’re going to run the race of faith, you’ve got to do some personal conditioning.

More than Mere Words
“I wilt give you the sure mercies of David”   (Acts 13:34).

Nothing of man is sure; but everything of God is so. Especially are covenant mercies sure mercies, even as David said “an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and sure.”

We are sure that the Loci meant His mercy. He did not speak mere wards: there is substance and truth in every one of His promises. His mercies are mercies indeed. Even if a promise seems as if it must drop through by reason of death, yet it never shall, for the good LORD will make good His word.

We are sure that the LORD will bestow promised mercies on all His covenanted ones. They shall come in due course to all the chosen of the LORD. They are sure to all the seed, from the least of them unto the greatest of them. We are sure that the LORD will continue His mercies to His own people. He does not give and take. What He has granted us is the token of much more. That which we have not yet received is as sure as that which has already come; therefore, let us wait before the LORD and be still. There is no justifiable reason for the least doubt. God’s love, and word, and faithfulness are sure. Many things are questionable, but of the LORD we sing —

For his mercies shall endure
Ever faithful, ever sure.

Prove me now (Malachi 3:10).

What is God saying here but this: “My child, I still have windows in Heaven. They are yet in service. The bolts slide as easily as of old. The hinges have not grown rusty. I would rather fling them open, and pour forth, than keep them shut, and hold back. I opened them for Moses, and the sea parted. I opened them for Joshua, and Jordan rolled back. I opened them for Gideon, and hosts fled. I will open them for you–if you will only let Me.

On this side of the windows, Heaven is the same rich storehouse as of old. The fountains and streams still overflow. The treasure rooms are still bursting with gifts. The lack is not on my side. It is on yours. I am waiting. Prove Me now. Fulfill the conditions, on your part. Bring in the tithes. Give Me a chance.

I can never forget my mother’s very brief paraphrase of Malachi 3:10. The verse begins, “Bring ye the whole tithe in,” and it ends up with “I will pour” the blessing out till you’ll be embarrassed for space. Her paraphrase was this: Give all He asks; take all He promises.”
–S. D. Gordon

The ability of God is beyond our prayers, beyond our largest prayers! I have been thinking of some of the petitions that have entered into my supplication innumerable times. What have I asked for? I have asked for a cupful, and the ocean remains! I have asked for a sunbeam, and the sun abides! My best asking falls immeasurably short of my Father’s giving: it is beyond that we can ask.
–J. H. Jowett

Over every promise write my name.

  1. BELIEVE, ON FAITH, JOHN 3:16: THAT GOD SENT HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, JESUS, TO THIS EARTH TO DIE ON THE CROSS AT CALVARY OVER 2,000 YEARS AGO, AS PAYMENT FOR ALL OF YOUR SINS, WAS BURIED IN A BORROWED TOMB, ROSE FROM THE DEAD ON THE 3RD DAY (EASTER) AND ASCENDED BACK INTO HEAVEN TO SIT ON HIS THRONE TO THE RIGHT-HAND OF HIS FATHER GOD AS OUR: HIGH-PRIEST, ADVOCATE, LORD AND SAVIOR;
  2. PRAY TO GOD ADMITTING THAT YOU ARE A SINNER AND THAT YOU REPENT OF THOSE SINS;
  3. ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR, ON FAITH;

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;

Around today;
Fill the space with loving work
And therein stay.

Look not through the sheltering bars
Upon tomorrow;

You Need Grace First

BIBLE MEDITATION:

“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord…”

A Change of Name
“And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, that thou shalt call Me Ishi; and shalt call Me no more Baali; for I will take away the names of Baalim out of her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name”   (Hosea 2:16-17).

That day has come. We view our God no more as Baal, our tyrant LORD and mighty master, for we are not under law but under grace. We now think of Jehovah, our God, as our Ishi, our beloved husband, our LORD in love, our next-of-kin in bonds of sacred relationship. We do not serve Him less obediently, but we serve Him for a higher and more endearing reason. We no longer tremble under His lash but rejoice in His love. The slave is changed into a child and the task into a pleasure.

Is it so with thee, dear reader? Has grace cast out slavish fear and implanted filial love? How happy are we in such an experience! Now we call the LORD’s day a delight, and worship is never a weariness. Prayer is now a privilege, and praise is a holiday. To obey is heaven; to give to the cause of God is a banquet. Thus have all things become new. Our mouth is filled with singing and our heart with music. Blessed be our heavenly Ishi forever and ever.

Daily Devotional: Streams in the Desert

July 27

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;

Around today;
Fill the space with loving work
And therein stay.

Look not through the sheltering bars
Upon tomorrow;

How Are You Running?

BIBLE MEDITATION:

“…who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God”

(Hebrews 12:2b)

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

Jesus is our example. He is a champion who, at the end of His race, received a crown of joy. When an athlete runs, he runs to win a trophy. In our verse today, what is “the joy set before Him”? It’s winning the race. He “endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

The crown gave Him the ability to endure. If you keep the crown in mind, you can bear the cross. But you cannot have the crown if you despise the cross. We are crucified with the Lord Jesus Christ.

I have a few trophies I won back in high school on a championship football team: a gold football, a letterman’s sweater and a silver cup. Do you know what happened to all those trophies? Someone broke into the house and got the gold football. The moths had a camp meeting in the sweater, and it’s gone—no more letters on the letter sweater. What happened to the silver cup? I haven’t the foggiest.

ACTION POINT:

Athletes run “to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown” (1 Corinthians 9:25). There is a prize for you to possess. Follow your Lord and walk as Jesus walked.

Nothing to Alarm Us
“But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days”   (Daniel 12:13).

We cannot understand all the prophecies, but yet we regard them with pleasure and not with dismay. There can be nothing in the Father’s decree which should justly alarm His child. Though the abomination of desolation be set up, yet the true believer shall not be defiled; rather shall he be purified, and made white, and tried. Though the earth be burned up, no smell of fire shall come upon the chosen. Amid the crash of matter and the wreck of worlds, the LORD Jehovah will preserve His own.

Calmly resolute in duty, brave in conflict, patient in suffering, let us go our way, keeping to our road, and neither swerving from it nor loitering in it. The end will come; let us go our way till it does.

Rest will be ours, All other things swing to and fro, but our foundation standeth sure. God rests in His love, and, therefore, we rest in it. Our peace is, and ever shall be, like a river. A lot in the heavenly Canaan is ours, and we shall stand in it, come what may. The God of Daniel will give a worthy portion to all who dare to be decided for truth and holiness as Daniel was. No den of lions shall deprive us of our sure inheritance.

Daily Devotional: Streams in the Desert

July 26

What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter (John 13:7).

We have only a partial view here of God’s dealings, His half-completed, half-developed plan; but all will stand out in fair and graceful proportions in the great finished Temple of Eternity!

Go, in the reign of Israel’s greatest king, to the heights of Lebanon. See that noble cedar, the pride of its compeers, an old wrestler with northern blasts! Summer loves to smile upon it, night spangles its feathery foliage with dewdrops, the birds nestle on its branches, the weary pilgrim or wandering shepherd reposes under its shadows from the midday heat or from the furious storm; but all at once it is marked out to fall; The aged denizen of the forest is doomed to succumb to the woodman’s stroke!

As we see the axe making its first gash on its gnarled trunk, then the noble limbs stripped of their branches, and at last the “Tree of God,” as was its distinctive epithet, coming with a crash to the ground, we exclaim against the wanton destruction, the demolition of this proud pillar in the temple of nature. We are tempted to cry with the prophet, as if inviting the sympathy of every lowlier stem–invoking inanimate things to resent the affront–“Howl, fir tree; for the cedar has fallen!”

How many of our souls are like these cedars of old! God’s axes of trial have stripped and bared them. We see no reason for dealings so dark and mysterious, but He has a noble end and object in view; to set them as everlasting pillars and rafters in His Heavenly Zion; to make them a “crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of our God.”
–Macduff

I do not ask my cross to understand,
My way to see–
Better in darkness just to feel Thy hand,
And follow Thee.

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;

Around today;
Fill the space with loving work
And therein stay.

Look not through the sheltering bars
Upon tomorrow;

Jesus runs alongside you!

BIBLE MEDITATION:

“…looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…”

(Hebrews 12:2a)

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

If we will look to Jesus, Jesus will be the author and finisher of our faith. The word “author” in the Greek literally means “example,” “leader,” or “originator.” Jesus is the example of faith, but He’s also the originator of our faith. Faith comes from beholding the Lord Jesus Christ, from looking at Him.

You see, all the other heroes of the faith mentioned in Hebrews 11 can cheer us on, but they’re not our chief example. Jesus is the One who never sinned, who never failed. The more you behold the Lord Jesus Christ, the more you’ll know He is the author and finisher.

He’s the one who originates the race. He’s the one who fires the starting gun. He’s the goal toward which we run. He is the coach who runs alongside us and gives us courage and strength to run.

ACTION POINT:

It is Jesus all the way. If you want faith, fix your eyes upon Jesus Christ. Keep “looking unto Jesus.” Your faith will grow.

Perfect Purity
“He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment”   (Revelation 3:5).

Warrior of the cross, fight on! Never rest till thy victory is complete, for thine eternal reward will prove worthy of a life of warfare.

See, here is perfect purity for thee! A few in Sardis kept their garments undefiled, and their recompense is to be spotless. Perfect holiness is the prize of our high calling; let us not miss it.

See, here is joy! Thou shalt wear holiday robes, such as men put on at wedding feasts; thou shalt be clothed with gladness and be made bright with rejoicing. Painful struggles shall end in peace of conscience and joy in the LORD.

See, here is victory! Thou shalt have thy triumph. Palm, and crown, and white robe shall be thy guerdon; thou shalt be treated as a conqueror and owned as such by the LORD Himself.

See, here is priestly array! Thou shalt stand before the LORD in such raiment as the sons of Aaron wore; thou shalt offer the sacrifices of thanksgiving and draw near unto the LORD with the incense of praise.

Who would not fight for a LORD who gives such large honors to the very least of His faithful servants? Who would not be clothed in a fool’s coat for Christ’s sake, seeing He will robe us with glory?

Daily Devotional: Streams in the Desert

July 25

Then believed they his words; they sang his praise. They soon forgot his works; they waited not for his counsel; but lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul (Psalms 106:12-15).

We read of Moses, that “he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.” Exactly the opposite was true of the children of Israel in this record. They endured only when the circumstances were favorable; they were largely governed by the things that appealed to their senses, in place of resting in the invisible and eternal God.

In the present day there are those who live intermittent Christian lives because they have become occupied with the outward, and center in circumstances, in place of centering in God. God wants us more and more to see Him in everything, and to call nothing small if it bears us His message.

Here we read of the children of Israel, “Then they believed his words.” They did not believe till after they saw–when they saw Him work, then they believed. They really doubted God when they came to the Red Sea; but when God opened the way and led them across and they saw Pharaoh and his host drowned–“then they believed.” They led an up and down life because of this kind of faith; it was a faith that depended upon circumstances. This is not the kind of faith God wants us to have.

The world says “seeing is believing,” but God wants us to believe in order to see. The Psalmist said, “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”

Do you believe God only when the circumstances are favorable, or do you believe no matter what the circumstances may be?
–C. H. P.

Faith is to believe what we do not see, and the reward of this faith is to see what we believe.
–St. Augustine

  1. BELIEVE, ON FAITH, JOHN 3:16: THAT GOD SENT HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, JESUS, TO THIS EARTH TO DIE ON THE CROSS AT CALVARY OVER 2,000 YEARS AGO, AS PAYMENT FOR ALL OF YOUR SINS, WAS BURIED IN A BORROWED TOMB, ROSE FROM THE DEAD ON THE 3RD DAY (EASTER) AND ASCENDED BACK INTO HEAVEN TO SIT ON HIS THRONE TO THE RIGHT-HAND OF HIS FATHER GOD AS OUR: HIGH-PRIEST, ADVOCATE, LORD AND SAVIOR;
  2. PRAY TO GOD ADMITTING THAT YOU ARE A SINNER AND THAT YOU REPENT OF THOSE SINS;
  3. ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR, ON FAITH;

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;

Around today;
Fill the space with loving work
And therein stay.

Look not through the sheltering bars
Upon tomorrow;
