DECEMBER 16

What If?…  Is God Enough?
“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.” Habakkuk 3:17-18
Is God enough for you? So many times we say, “Oh, I love the Lord because He has given me a wonderful family.” Or, “I love the Lord because of the beautiful day He has given.” I call this “because” kind of love. And that kind of love can be threatening.
What if a woman told her husband, “Honey, I love you because you’re so rich.” Then he loses his health and ability to earn an income for the family.
What if a husband told his wife, “I love you because you’re such a great cook.” And she loses her ability to cook.
These would be threats to the future of their love for one another. They could say, “Well, since I can no longer do this, I have lost his/her love.”
A lot of people love God this way. They love Him as long as He is blessing them. But what if His blessings were taken away? Would you still love Him?

Trust in the Lord and do what is right! Settle in the land and maintain your integrity! —Ps 37:3
The word trust is the heart word of faith. It is the Old Testament word, the word given to the early and infant stage of faith. The word faith expresses more the act of the will, the word belief the act of the mind or intellect, but trust is the language of the heart. The other has reference more to a truth believed or a thing expected.
Trust implies more than this, it sees and feels, and leans upon a person, a great, true, living heart of love. So let us “trust also in him,” through all the delays, in spite of all the difficulties, in the face of all the denials, notwithstanding all the seemings, even when we cannot understand the way, and know not the issue; still “trust also in him, and he will bring it to pass.” The way will open, the right issue will come, the end will be peace, the cloud will be lifted, and the light of an eternal noonday shall shine at last.
Trust and rest when all around thee
Puts thy faith to sorest test;
Let no fear or foe confound thee,
Wait for God and trust and rest.
“Trust and rest with heart abiding,
Like a birdling in its nest,
Underneath His feathers hiding,
Fold thy wings and trust and rest
.”

Do Not Fear Those Who Can Kill Only the Body

December 07, 2017

What if someone broke into your house and threatened to kill you? How do you think you or I might react?

What if you were about to be killed because of your faith in Christ? What do you think you would say or do?

Or what if the fears of some came true, and the nuclear bombs began to fall?  How do you think we would respond? Does the Bible have anything to say to us about such horrible and catastrophic events?

Earlier this week I read a scripture in which Jesus specifically addresses such fears. (I had not read it in a while, and it got my attention precisely because I myself have feared the kinds of things I just mentioned.)  Jesus said, “And do not fear those who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can kill both body and soul in hell.” (Matthew 10:28).

These words of Jesus are sobering to say the least. But they are also comforting!

Imagine you were a Christian in a part of the world where some people wanted to kill you just because you believed Jesus is the Son of God. Your potential persecutors would of course want you to fear them, but would they have ever heard this verse where Jesus says not to fear those who can kill only the body but instead to fear only Him who can destroy both body and soul in hell? (Then your persecutors would be the ones who should be afraid for what they are about to do!)

Persecution, and even being killed for our faith, can happen in America. Christians have been shot in church worshipping God. It happened at Mother Emmanuel Church in Charleston, S.C. and at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, TX.  Be honest. Have you feared that? Could such a fear keep you from going to church? Jesus says that a crazy shooter could kill your body but not your soul, and for that reason you should not fear such a person! He says you and I should fear only the One who can destroy both body and soul in hell.

GOOD NEWS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD

========================================================================

March 5

Morning …

1 Thessalonians 5:6
Let us not sleep, as do others.

There are many ways of promoting Christian wakefulness. Among the rest, let me strongly advise Christians to converse together concerning the ways of the Lord. Christian and Hopeful, as they journeyed towards the Celestial City, said to themselves, “To prevent drowsiness in this place, let us fall into good discourse.” Christian enquired, “Brother, where shall we begin?” And Hopeful answered, “Where God began with us.” Then Christian sang this song-

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;
Yea, let them learn of them, in any wise,
Thus to keep open their drowsy slumb’ring eyes.
Saints’ fellowship, if it be managed well,
Keeps them awake, and that in spite of hell.”

Christians who isolate themselves and walk alone, are very liable to grow drowsy. Hold Christian company, and you will be kept wakeful by it, and refreshed and encouraged to make quicker progress in the road to heaven. But as you thus take “sweet counsel” with others in the ways of God, take care that the theme of your converse is the Lord Jesus. Let the eye of faith be constantly looking unto Him; let your heart be full of Him; let your lips speak of His worth. Friend, live near to the cross, and thou wilt not sleep. Labour to impress thyself with a deep sense of the value of the place to which thou art going. If thou rememberest that thou art going to heaven, thou wilt not sleep on the road. If thou thinkest that hell is behind thee, and the devil pursuing thee, thou wilt not loiter. Would the manslayer sleep with the avenger of blood behind him, and the city of refuge before him? Christian, wilt thou sleep whilst the pearly gates are open-the songs of angels waiting for thee to join them-a crown of gold ready for thy brow? Ah! no; in holy fellowship continue to watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation.

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

God continues to bless Sagemont Church.  In the last two Sundays, over 100 people have made public decisions to make Jesus Christ Lord of their life.  Pastors Chuck Schneider, Stuart Rothberg, and Jim Hastings have been teaching the scriptures as both the Old and New Testaments prophesy and proclaim that Jesus Christ is coming back to this earth again to claim and receive His children unto Himself.  During the worship services, I am preaching the message and promise of the return of Christ.

One may ask, “Pastor, why do you passionately believe that Jesus is literally going to return to the earth?”  These are a few reasons:

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

  1.  Jesus said He would!  John 14:3 “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
  2.  The entire Christian view of history demands it.
  3. The prophetic signs found in scripture are now clearly being fulfilled.
  • Earthquakes all over the globe.  Matthew 24:7 – (over 20,000 since 1971)
  • Hearts will fail for fear.  Luke 21:26 –  Suicides are epidemic.
  • Great explosions of learning.  II Timothy 3:7 – People cannot discern the truth.
  • Immorality abounds.  Luke 17:26-27 – Like the days of Noah.

Scripture clearly teaches that Jesus will come to save His children and judge the rest.

God and Churchill

godchurchillI have just completed reading one of the best books that I have read in the last twenty years.  God and Churchill, written by one of our newest Sagemont members Jonathan Sandys (pronounced “sands”), great-grandson of Sir Winston Churchill.  Wallace Henley, staff member at Second Baptist Church, Houston, assisted Jonathan in this profound book.  The purpose of the book is to make clear “how the great leader’s sense of divine destiny changed his troubled world and offers help for ours.”  Tyndale Momentum is the publisher.  The book has many profound quotes.  However, there is one that has impacted my life more than many others.  Prime Minister of Great Britain, Margaret Thatcher, addressing the Church of Scotland General Assembly in 1988, said “I think back to many discussions in my early life when we all agreed that if you try to take the fruits of Christianity without its roots, the fruits will wither.  And they will not come back unless you nurture the roots.”

One of the responsibilities of the Bride of Christ, the Church, is to keep Christianity on track and prevent the derailing of His ultimate purpose.  The paganism that is engulfing us today will ultimately destroy us unless we return to the roots of our faith.  “Our faith is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.”  It is on the solid rock we must stand for truly all other ground is sinking sand.

Note:  The book God and Churchill is available in the Sagemont Bookstore.

DECEMBER 15

Seeing Your Life from the Foot of the Cross!
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”John 3:16
A boy was having difficulty living the Christian life. He went to his pastor, who told him to see a painting. The caretaker at the gallery led him to a large room where the painting adorned an entire wall.
The young man was repulsed at what he saw. It was a painting of Christ on the cross, but the perspective from which the artist painted it was off-balance. It looked grotesque.
The caretaker said, “Son, you need to get closer.”
The young man came closer.
“Son, you need to get lower.”
The young man got lower.
“No, closer and lower.”
Before the young man knew what was happening, he was kneeling at the foot of the cross.
And when he looked up, he understood the entire painting.
Until you are willing to take your place at the foot of the cross, the Christian life will never make sense to you, too.
==============================================

December 15

His disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray… and he said unto them, “When ye pray, say… Thy kingdom come”
 (Luke 11:1-2).
When they said, “Teach us to pray,” the Master lifted His eyes and swept the far horizon of God. He gathered up the ultimate dream of the Eternal, and, rounding the sum of everything God intends to do in the life of man, He packed it all into these three terse pregnant phrases and said, “When you pray, pray after this manner.” What a contrast between this and much praying we have heard.
When we follow the devices of our own hearts, how runs it? “O Lord bless me, then My family, My church, My city, My country,” and away on the far fringe as we close up, there is a prayer for the extension of His Kingdom throughout the wide parish of the world.
The Master begins where we leave off. The world first, my personal needs second, is the order of this prayer. Only after my prayer has crossed every continent and every  far-flung island of the sea, after it has taken in the last man in the last backward race, after it has covered the entire wish and purpose, of God for the world, only then am I taught to ask for a piece of bread for myself.
When Jesus gave His all, Himself for us and to us in the holy extravagance of the Cross, is it too much if He asks us to do the same thing? No man or woman amounts to anything in the kingdom, no soul ever touches even the edge of the zone of power, until this lesson is learned that Christ’s business is the supreme concern of life and that all personal considerations, however dear or important, are tributary thereto.
–Dr. Francis
When Robert Moffat, the veteran African missionary and explorer, was asked once to write in a young lady’s album, he penned these lines:
My album is a savage breast,
Where tempests brood and shadows rest,
Without one ray of light;
To write the name of Jesus there,
And see that savage bow in prayer,
And point to worlds more bright and fair,
This is my soul’s delight.
“And His Kingdom shall have no frontier” (Luke 1:33, the old Moravian version).
The missionary enterprise is not the Church’s afterthought; it is Christ’s forethought.
–Henry van Dyke

DECEMBER 14

Everybody Has the Same 86,400!
“This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24
Have you ever heard someone say, “He has more time than I have.” That’s not true. No one has more time. There are only 86,400 seconds in a day. Nobody has more time than that, even the man in Switzerland who owns the $7 million watch I read about recently. He doesn’t have one more second than you have.
You have a day that God has made. It is a gift from God. That is why it is called the present. Every morning, His mercies are new.
Every day God gives you enough time to learn, enough time to work, enough time to laugh, enough time to love. He gives you enough time to do gracefully everything He wants you to do. It is a gift. What kind of steward are you of that gift today?

I will give you the treasures of darkness (Isaiah 45:3).
In the famous lace shops of Brussels, there are certain rooms devoted to the spinning of the finest and most delicate patterns. These rooms are altogether darkened, save for a light from one very small window, which falls directly upon the pattern. There is only one spinner in the room, and he sits where the narrow stream of light falls upon the threads of his weaving. “Thus,” we are told by the guide, “do we secure our choicest products. Lace is always more delicately and beautifully woven when the worker himself is in the dark and only his pattern is in the light.”
May it not be the same with us in our weaving? Sometimes it is very dark. We cannot understand what we are doing. We do not see the web we are weaving. We are not able to discover any beauty, any possible good in our experience. Yet if we are faithful and fail not and faint not, we shall some day know that the most exquisite work of all our life was done in those days when it was so dark.
If you are in the deep shadows because of some strange, mysterious providence, do not be afraid. Simply go on in faith and love, never doubting. God is watching, and He will bring good and beauty out of all your pain and tears.
–J. R. Miller
The shuttles of His purpose move
To carry out His own design;
Seek not too soon to disapprove
His work, nor yet assign
Dark motives, when, with silent tread,
You view some sombre fold;
For lo, within each darker thread
There twines a thread of gold.
Spin cheerfully,
Not tearfully,
He knows the way you plod;
Spin carefully,
Spin prayerfully,
But leave the thread with God.

========================================================================

March 5

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;

DECEMBER 13

Is It You or God at Work?
“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13
I can’t do anything like Jesus, can you? At least not in my strength. But aren’t you glad that the Example of our obedience is also the Enabler of our obedience? God is responsible for the desire and the doing.
The word “worketh” in Philippians 2:13 is the word from which we get our English word “energy.” God energizes us to do His will. It is like the power steering in your automobile. The power steering is there to work for you, but it waits on you to turn the wheel. The moment you turn the wheel, you will notice the wonderful power.
The moment you decide to serve God, His power takes over. God is waiting on you right now to serve Him. What are you waiting for?

The last drops of my sacrifice are falling; my time to go has come. I have fought in the good fight; I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:6-22).
As soldiers show their scars and talk of battles when they come at last to spend their old age in the country at home, so shall we in the dear land to which we are hastening, speak of the goodness and faithfulness of God who brought us through all the trials of the way. I would not like to stand in the white-robed host and hear it said, “These are they that came out of great tribulation, all except one.”
Would you like to be there and see yourself pointed at as the one saint who never knew a sorrow? Oh, no! for you would be an alien in the midst of the sacred brotherhood. We will be content to share the battle, for we shall soon wear the crown and wave the palm.
–C. H. Spurgeon
“Where were you wounded?” asked the surgeon of a soldier at Lookout Mountain. “Almost at the top,” he answered. He forgot even his gaping wound–he only remembered that he had won the heights.
So let us go forth to higher endeavors for Christ and never rest till we can shout from the very top, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

The rest for thee by God
Is rest forever.

But the notches on the blade.
What nobler decoration of honor can any godly man seek after than his scars of service, his losses for the crown, his reproaches for Christ’s sake, his being worn out in his Master’s service.

Do Not Fear Those Who Can Kill Only the Body

December 07, 2017

What if someone broke into your house and threatened to kill you? How do you think you or I might react?

Or what if the fears of some came true, and the nuclear bombs began to fall?  How do you think we would respond? Does the Bible have anything to say to us about such horrible and catastrophic events?

Persecution, and even being killed for our faith, can happen in America. Christians have been shot in church worshipping God. It happened at Mother Emmanuel Church in Charleston, S.C. and at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, TX.  Be honest. Have you feared that? Could such a fear keep you from going to church? Jesus says that a crazy shooter could kill your body but not your soul, and for that reason you should not fear such a person! He says you and I should fear only the One who can destroy both body and soul in hell.

GOOD NEWS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD

========================================================================

March 5

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

DECEMBER 12

Your Life is in His Keeping!
“Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”
Psalm 55:22
I have a preacher friend who was on an airplane when the weather got really rough. The lady next to him was whimpering a little from fear and so he turned to her and tried to comfort her.
She said, “Do you mean to tell me you’re not afraid?”
And he replied, “Well, I have committed my life into the keeping of my heavenly Father. And I have to be honest, I’ve reminded Him about that fact several times since we’ve been up here.”
Remind the Lord of His keeping as often as you want when times are rough. Cast your burden upon the Lord, and leave it there. Don’t pick it back up. He is able. In fact, He is more than able.

Attention! Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, who serve in the Lord’s temple during the night. May the Lord, the Creator of heaven and earth, bless you from Zion!  —Ps 134:1, 3

Strange time for adoration, you say, to stand in God’s house by night, to worship in the depth of sorrow —it is indeed an arduous thing. Yes, and therein lies the blessing; it is the test of perfect faith. If I would know the love of my friend I must see what it can do in the winter. So with the Divine love. It is easy for me to worship in the summer sunshine when the melodies of life are in the air and the fruits of life are on the tree. But let the song of the bird cease and the fruit of the tree fall, and will my heart still go on to sing? Will I stand in God’s house by night? Will I love Him in His own night? Will I watch with Him even one hour in His Gethsemane? Will I help to bear His cross up the dolorous way? Will I stand beside Him in His dying moments with Mary and the beloved disciple? Will I be able with Nicodemus to take up the dead Christ? Then is my worship complete and my blessing glorious. My love has come to Him in His humiliation. My faith has found Him in His lowliness. My heart has recognized His majesty through His mean disguise, and I know at last that I desire not the gift but the Giver. When I can stand in His house by night I have accepted Him for Himself alone.
—George Matheson

DECEMBER 11

Wrestling with a Python!
“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And He is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
 1 John 2:1-2
The headline caught my attention! “Tail Was Short. Snake Was Not.” I read the entire article. It seems there was a lady in South Africa who passed a haystack one day and saw the tail of a snake.
She took a stick to kill it, and before she knew it she was wrestling with a 17-foot python! Thankfully, a man quickly came along to kill the snake with a fence post; otherwise it would have crushed her to death.
You may think your sin is just a little sin, but I want to tell you that it is part of the same snake. Sin murdered Jesus, and sin will crush you. Your only hope is salvation through Jesus Christ.
Realize it: you may think that “little tail” is really nothing…but before you know it, that sin can grip and kill you. Take death to it now—before it takes you.

But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort that you experience in your patient endurance of the same sufferings that we also suffer. And our hope for you is steadfast because we know that as you share in our sufferings, so also you will share in our comfort. —2 Cor 1:6-7
Are there not some in your circle to whom you naturally betake yourself in times of trial and sorrow? They always seem to speak the right word, to give the very counsel you are longing for; you do not realize, however, the cost which they had to pay ere they became so skillful in binding up the gaping wounds and drying tears. But if you were to investigate their past history you would find that they have suffered more than most. They have watched the slow untwisting of some silver cord on which the lamp of life hung. They have seen the golden bowl of joy dashed to their feet, and its contents spilt. They have stood by ebbing tides, and drooping gourds, and noon sunsets; but all this has been necessary to make them the nurses, the physicians, the priests of men. The boxes that come from foreign climes are clumsy enough; but they contain spices which scent the air with the fragrance of the Orient. So suffering is rough and hard to bear; but it hides beneath it discipline, education, possibilities, which not only leave us nobler, but perfect us to help others. Do not fret, or set your teeth, or wait doggedly for the suffering to pass; but get out of it all you can, both for yourself and for your service to your generation, according to the will of God.

Once I heard a song of sweetness,
As it cleft the morning air,
Sounding in its blest completeness,
Like a tender, pleading prayer;
And I sought to find the singer,
Whence the wondrous song was borne;
And I found a bird, sore wounded,
Pinioned by a cruel thorn.
I have seen a soul in sadness,
While its wings with pain were furl’d,
Giving hope, and cheer and gladness
That should bless a weeping world;
And I knew that life of sweetness,
Was of pain and sorrow row borne,
And a stricken soul was singing,
With its heart against a thorn.
Ye are told of One who loved you,
Of a Saviour crucified,
Ye are told of nails that pinioned,
And a spear that pierced His side;
Ye are told of cruel scourging,
Of a Saviour bearing scorn,
And He died for your salvation,
With His brow against a thorn.
Ye “are not above the Master.”
Will you breathe a sweet refrain?
And His grace will be sufficient,
When your heart is pierced with pain.
Will you live to bless His loved ones,
Tho’ your life be bruised and torn,
Like the bird that sang so sweetly,
With its heart against a thorn?

========================================================================

March 5

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;

DECEMBER 10

Would You Attend If the President Were Coming?
“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.”
Matthew 18:20
One day, the secret service visited a church to check it out for the President of the United States. For some reason the President decided not to come, but the news was already out around town. Soon people were calling the church to find out if anyone could come that Sunday.
A lady called who wasn’t a member, but she wanted to see the President. She asked the pastor, “Is it true that the President of the United States is going to be in your services on Sunday?” The preacher said, “No madam, he will not be here, but the King of kings will be, and that ought to be good enough for you.”
Jesus meets with His people, and He doesn’t care about the credentials of the guest list. He is in their midst.
It’s easy to become complacent—until we remember that the Lord is in our midst when we gather. And He is more worthy of honor than any potentate.

For this our light and transitory burden of suffering is achieving for us a weight of glory (2 Cor. 4:17). (Weymouth)
The question is repeatedly asked–Why is the life of man drenched with so much blood, and blistered with so many tears? The answer is to be found in the word “achieving”; these things are achieving for us something precious. They are teaching us not only the way to victory, but better still the laws of victory. There is a compensation in every sorrow, and the sorrow is working out the compensation. It is the cry of the dear old hymn:
“Nearer my God to Thee, nearer to Thee,
E’en tho’ it be a cross that raiseth me.”
Joy sometimes needs pain to give it birth. Fanny Crosby could never have written her beautiful hymn, “I shall see Him face to face,” were it not for the fact that she had never looked upon the green fields nor the evening sunset nor the kindly twinkle in her mother’s eye. It was the loss of her own vision that helped her to gain her remarkable spiritual discernment.
It is comforting to know that sorrow tarries only for the night; it takes its leave in the morning. A thunderstorm is very brief when put alongside the long summer day. “Weeping may endure for the night but joy cometh in the morning.”
–Songs in the Night
There is a peace that cometh after sorrow,
Of hope surrendered, not of hope fulfilled;
A peace that looketh not upon tomorrow,
But calmly on a tempest that it stilled.
A peace that lives not now in joy’s excesses,
Nor in the happy life of love secure;
But in the unerring strength the heart possesses,
Of conflicts won while learning to endure.
A peace there is, in sacrifice secluded,
A life subdued, from will and passion free;
‘Tis not the peace that over Eden brooded,

But that which triumphed in Gethsemane.

DECEMBER 9

Do You See Yourself as a Prophet?
“Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, To the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the beloved.”
 Ephesians 1:5-6
In the Old Testament, there were three types of persons who were anointed by God: the prophet, the priest, and the king. As a believer, you are also a prophet, a priest, and a king because God has anointed you.
As prophet, you are to receive the Word from God and share that Word with others. As priest, you have direct access to God, so you can worship Him and offer spiritual sacrifices to Him. As king, you are to reign with Christ in this life.
Now, as you face the cares of the day, you can ask yourself, “What would a prophet say?” “How would a priest respond?” and “Would a king do this?”
Remind yourself throughout the day: By His grace, in Him I am a prophet, priest and king.

Put on as the elect of God, kindness
 (Colossians 3:12).
There is a story of an old man who carried a little can of oil with him everywhere he went, and if he passed through a door that squeaked, he poured a little oil on the hinges. If a gate was hard to open, he oiled the latch. And thus he passed through life lubricating all hard places and making it easier for those who came after him. People called him eccentric, queer, and cranky; but the old man went steadily on refilling his can of oil when it became empty, and oiled the hard places he found.
There are many lives that creak and grate harshly as they live day by day. Nothing goes right with them. They need lubricating with the oil of gladness, gentleness, or thoughtfulness.
Have you your own can of oil with you? Be ready with your oil of helpfulness in the early morning to the one nearest you. It may lubricate the whole day for him. The oil, of good cheer to the downhearted one–Oh, how much it may mean! The word of courage to the despairing. Speak it. Our lives touch others but once, perhaps, on the road of life; and then, mayhap, our ways diverge, never to meet again.
The oil of kindness has worn the sharp, hard edges off of many a sin-hardened life and left it soft and pliable and ready for the redeeming grace of the Saviour. A word spoken pleasantly is a large spot of sunshine on a sad heart. Therefore, “Give others the sunshine, tell Jesus the rest.”
We cannot know the grief
That men may borrow;
We cannot see the souls
Storm-swept by sorrow;
But love can shine upon the way
Today, tomorrow;
Let us be kind.
Upon the wheel of pain so many weary lives are broken,
We live in vain who give no tender token.
Let us be kind.
“Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love” (Romans 12:10).

========================================================================

March 5

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;

DECEMBER 8

Just How Secure Are We?
“Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.”
Hebrews 7:25
Because Jesus lives, I live. Because I am a part of Him and He will never die, I will never die. I am not just looking to Jesus for my salvation; I am a part of Jesus’ body and have been raised to live for Him.
I’ll get worried about losing my salvation when Jesus dies. Well, He is not going to die.You’re absolutely right! He lives to make intercession for us.
Believers are secure in this world because our salvation is rooted in God’s mercy, is raised in a new birth, and is resting in His resurrection power.
Thank God for the keeping power of the Lord!

=================================================================

December 8

Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts. And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hands” (2 Kings 3:16-18).
To human thinking it was simply impossible, but nothing is hard for God. Without a sound or sign, from sources invisible and apparently impossible, the floods came stealing in all night long; and when the morning dawned, those ditches were flooded with the crystal waters, and reflecting the rays of the morning sun from the red hills of Edom.
Our unbelief is always wanting some outward sign. The religion of many is largely sensational, and they are not satisfied of its genuineness without manifestations, etc.; but the greatest triumph of faith is to be still and know that He is God.
The great victory of faith is to stand before some impassable Red Sea, and hear the Master say, “Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord,” and “Go forward!” As we step out without any sign or sound–not a wave-splash–and wetting our very feet as we take the first step into its waters, still marching on we shall see the sea divide and the pathway open through the very midst of the waters.

If we have seen the miraculous workings of God in some marvelous case of healing or some extraordinary providential deliverance, I am sure the thing that has impressed us most has been the quietness with which it was all done, the absence of everything spectacular and sensational, and the utter sense of nothingness which came to us as we stood in the presence of this mighty God and felt how easy, it was for Him to do it all without the faintest effort on His part or the slightest help on ours.
It is not the part of faith to question, but to obey. The ditches were made, and the water came pouring in from some supernatural source. What a lesson for our faith!
Are you craving a spiritual blessing? Open the trenches, and God will fill them. And this, too, in the most unexpected places and in the most unexpected ways. Oh, for that faith that can act by faith and not by sight, and expect God to work although we see no wind or rain.

========================================================================

March 5

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;

DECEMBER 7

Hold the Things of This World Loosely!
“And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that aught of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.”
 Acts 4:32
You can tell a lot about a person by what makes him sad, what makes him glad, and what makes him mad. Amen? When a person has joy in the Lord, the things that distress other people are not going to have much effect.
To fully trust in the Lord, there must be—
Have you learned to have joy in the Lord and not in the things of this world? Are you holding the things of this world loosely? If you don’t, God may teach you to do this.
