The shackles hurt his feet; his neck was placed in an iron collar,—Ps 105:18

Turn that about and render it in our language, and it reads thus, “Iron entered his soul.” Is there not a truth in this? That sorrow and privation, the yoke borne in the youth, the soul’s enforced restraint, are all conducive to an iron tenacity and strength of purpose, and endurance or fortitude, which are the indispensable foundation and framework of a noble character.

Do not flinch from suffering; bear it silently, patiently, resignedly; and be sure that it is God’s way of infusing iron into your spiritual life. The world wants iron dukes, iron battalions, iron sinews, and thews of steel. God wants iron saints; and since there is no way of imparting iron tothe moral nature but by letting people suffer, He lets them suffer.

Are the best years of your life slipping away in enforced monotony? Are you beset by opposition, misunderstanding, and scorn, as the thick undergrowth besets the passage of the woodsman pioneer? Then take heart; the time is not wasted; God is only putting you through the iron regimen. The iron crown of suffering precedes the golden crown of glory. And iron is entering into your soul to make it strong and brave.
—F. B. Meyer

“But you will not mind the roughness nor the steepness ofthe way,
Nor the chill, unrested morning, nor the searness of theday;
And you will not take a turning to the left or the right,
But go straight ahead, nor tremble at the coming of thenight,
For the road leads home.”

Answers to 2015 Geographical Quiz:

ANSWERS

   1. The Great Wall of China. Sticky rice flour, mixed with slaked lime, made a surprisingly effective and durable mortar.

2. Australia

3. California

4. Andorra

5. In the Indian Ocean, southeast of Madagascar.

6. The Zimbabwean dollar. After a stupefying run of hyperinflation, it was officially abandoned in 2009 in favor of a variety of foreign currencies, including the U.S. dollar. Through earlier this year, however, residents with mountains of them could still trade them for U.S. dollars at the rate of 1:35,000,000,000,000,000.

7. The Great Pyramid of Giza. There have been many versions of the list over the centuries, but the Great Pyramid is on all of them.

8. New Zealand

9. Curacao. Coincidentally, or not, the governor also happened to own shares in the island’s only paint factory.

10. The Spanish Steps

11. Nairobi, Kenya

12. Sikkim

13. Mount Ararat is in eastern Turkey, not far from its borders with Iran, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

14. The Southern Cross

15. Drake Passage is located between South America and Antarctica.

16. Forty-five square miles of land and water that is Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, which the U.S. seized during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Fidel Castro’s government didn’t recognize the 1903 treaty. According to one report, the uncashed checks, dating to the 1959 revolution and collectively worth about $228,000, are stuffed in a desk drawer in Castro’s office.

17. Local guides claim this about the Taj Mahal. Alas, it is a fanciful idea historians debunk.

18. South Africa and Namibia. Known locally as “Cape fur seals,” the marine mammals that populate the coastal regions of southern Africa are actually sea lions.

19. You ought to know by now to go with the nonintuitive answer. Palm-lined Cannes, where Brigitte Bardot used to frolic in a bikini, is about 10 miles farther north than the frozen tundra of Milwaukee.

20. Machu Picchu. Nobody seems to know the origin of this odd rule.

21. The South Pole is colder. Among other things, it stands on a thick ice sheet at an elevation of 9,000 feet. The North Pole is at sea level.

22. Kilimanjaro, at 19,341 feet.

23. Italy, specifically the Naples area. As the name implies, you can circle Mount Vesuvius aboard it.

24. Crete

25. You weigh slightly less at the equator, due to centrifugal force — about 5.5 ounces lighter for every 100 pounds.

26. Montreal is usually accorded second place among Francophone cities, although you can make a strong case for Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It depends how you define “French speaker.” Kinshasa has a far larger population that speaks some French, but a greater percentage of Montréalais use French as their primary language.

27. Mount Everest. “Sagarmatha” is a Nepali name for the peak, which is also called “Chomolungma” by Sherpas and Tibetans.

28. In the Andes Mountains of South America. The language, still widely spoken, predates the Incas.

29. The yeti, or Abominable Snowman. In Bhutan it’s called a migoi.

30. It is officially signed as the “James Dean Memorial Junction” in honor of the late actor, who died in a collision there in 1955.

31. Well, they see the southern lights. Whereas the northern lights are called the aurora borealis, the southern version is known as the aurora australis.

32. Paris. Recently a blogger posted that the lone stop sign, at the exit of a building company on Quai Saint-Exupéry in the 16th arrondissement, has temporarily gone missing.

33. Antarctica. It was named for Carl G. Vinson, a Georgia congressman who supported Antarctic exploration and first climbed by Nick Clinch in 1966.

34. If you said the River Thames you would have been correct   — up until this year. Because of overcrowding at the Cotswold site, the event was moved to a bridge over the River Windrush in Witney, Oxfordshire.

35. Botswana

36. Brazil

37. Poland. Today, it is bordered by a reunited Germany to the west; the divorced Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; the now-independent nations of Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania to the east and the enclave of Kaliningrad Oblast (formerly USSR, now Russian) to the north. None of these existed in their present form in 1989.

38. The Indian Ocean

39. Illinois

40. Coca-Cola, which has been called the most ubiquitous brand-name product in the world.

41. South Florida. Now you just have to tell them apart.

42. Everest himself. Turns out it isn’t just Indians who can’t pronounce his name properly. It’s supposed to be EVE-rest, not EVER-est.

43. The island, currently a research station for marine biologists, appeared in the opening sequence of the “Gilligan’s Island” TV show in its second and third seasons.

44. Not only would they all fit, there would be a thousand rooms left over. The population of Bellagio, Italy, is 2,945; the Bellagio Las Vegas hotel has 3,950 rooms.

45. Spain’s highest point is 12,198-foot Pico del Teide, a volcano on Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

46. Mexico City

47. “Jerry Springer.” Springer’s mother had taken shelter there during an air raid in World War II.

48. Houston. Actually, the first words spoken from the surface of the moon were Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin calling out “contact light,” indicating that the lunar lander had touched down. There followed an exchange about shutting down the engine before Neil Armstrong radioed, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”

49. Victoria Falls, on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

50. On either side of the Strait of Gibraltar.

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

God continues to bless Sagemont Church.  In the last two Sundays, over 100 people have made public decisions to make Jesus Christ Lord of their life.  Pastors Chuck Schneider, Stuart Rothberg, and Jim Hastings have been teaching the scriptures as both the Old and New Testaments prophesy and proclaim that Jesus Christ is coming back to this earth again to claim and receive His children unto Himself.  During the worship services, I am preaching the message and promise of the return of Christ.

One may ask, “Pastor, why do you passionately believe that Jesus is literally going to return to the earth?”  These are a few reasons:

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

  1.  Jesus said He would!  John 14:3 “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
  2.  The entire Christian view of history demands it.
  3. The prophetic signs found in scripture are now clearly being fulfilled.
  • Earthquakes all over the globe.  Matthew 24:7 – (over 20,000 since 1971)
  • Hearts will fail for fear.  Luke 21:26 –  Suicides are epidemic.
  • Great explosions of learning.  II Timothy 3:7 – People cannot discern the truth.
  • Immorality abounds.  Luke 17:26-27 – Like the days of Noah.

Scripture clearly teaches that Jesus will come to save His children and judge the rest.

Investing in Others for God’s Glory

“I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord.” – Isaiah 63:7

One time a man came into a village and asked an old man living there, “Any great men born here?” The old man said, “No, just babies.”

Great men are not born; great men are made, investing in the lives of others, sharing God’s love, and showing His mercies.

There is not a magic formula that instantly makes us sanctified. Sanctification is a process. Our calling is to be poured out into the lives of others for His glory.

How can you show His mercies to a lost co-worker or neighbor today? Pray about it and then watch for how God provides!
