Biblical Foundations with Cultural Implications

Wednesday evening over 1,000 of us were enlightened and motivated as David Platt, President of the International Mission Board, spoke at the appointment service for 25 men and women being sent around the world to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. I thought you would also enjoy the highlights from another message David recently preached in the chapel at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary as reported in the Winter 2015 edition of Southwestern News. Preaching from Genesis 1-3, Platt identified four biblical foundations with cultural implications for the church today.

“Based upon biblical foundations clearly laid on the opening pages of history, I challenge you to engage in the battle on the front lines in our culture, from abortion to poverty; from slavery to sexual immorality,” Platt said. “To refuse to pick and choose which battles you’re going to stand up and speak out on and which ones you’re going to stay silent on.”

Beginning with the biblical foundation that God creates people as a demonstration of His glory, Platt explained that such a foundation’s cultural implication is that Christians must fight against abortion. Citing statistics indicating that there are 130,000 abortions around the world every day, Platt said, “I do not believe it is an overstatement to call abortion a modern holocaust.”

The second biblical foundation is that God designs people for the display of His gospel, the implication being that Christians must flee sexual immorality and defend sexual complementarity within marriage for the sake of the Gospel.

“This is one of those areas in our day where the word of God comes up totally against the patterns of our culture,” Platt said, “and we’re forced to make a decision: are we going to believe the Bible or not? Are we going to trust God who says we all have personal worth, are made in His image, and yet have different roles in a way that does not devalue worth but actually exalts worth?”

The third biblical foundation is that God judges people by His righteous law. The implication, then, is that Christians must work for justice in the world as they speak about the Judge of the world. Platt said Christians need to open their eyes to the desperate poverty and gross injustice in the world.

The final biblical foundation is that God pursues people with His redeeming love. The implication is that Christians must give their lives and lead their churches to pursue the 6,000 people groups still unreached by God’s redeeming love.

“When our time is done,” Platt said, “may it be said of you and me that we loved our Lord and led His church for the demonstration of His glory and the display of His Gospel amongst the most pressing issues of our day, including those people who’ve never even heard the Gospel.”

  • What Did You Pray For This Morning?

“Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. And he killed James, the brother of John, with the sword. And…he proceeded further to take Peter also…. And…he put him in prison….Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him….And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him….And the angel said unto him, “Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals…and follow me.”… And…he came to the house of Mary the mother of John…where many were gathered together praying….Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.” Acts 12: 1-5, 7-8, 12, 16

Peter was in prison and the church was praying. They had no other recourse. They couldn’t petition the government to release him. They had no political influence, no money to bribe Herod. But they could pray. The world might have laughed, but friend, the devil didn’t laugh.

Someone wisely said, “The devil trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon his knees.”  They offered focused prayer to God, and God controls the universe.

Notice that “Prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him” (v. 5). They prayed for Peter not only with intensity but with specificity.

What did you pray for this morning? Many of our prayers, like “Lord, save the lost,” are so vague, if God were to answer them we wouldn’t know it, and if God didn’t answer them we wouldn’t have to admit it.

Stop praying vague, general prayers. Get specific. When they prayed for Peter and the answer came, they knew it was an answer to prayer.
