Biblical Foundations with Cultural Implications

Wednesday evening over 1,000 of us were enlightened and motivated as David Platt, President of the International Mission Board, spoke at the appointment service for 25 men and women being sent around the world to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. I thought you would also enjoy the highlights from another message David recently preached in the chapel at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary as reported in the Winter 2015 edition of Southwestern News. Preaching from Genesis 1-3, Platt identified four biblical foundations with cultural implications for the church today.

“Based upon biblical foundations clearly laid on the opening pages of history, I challenge you to engage in the battle on the front lines in our culture, from abortion to poverty; from slavery to sexual immorality,” Platt said. “To refuse to pick and choose which battles you’re going to stand up and speak out on and which ones you’re going to stay silent on.”

Beginning with the biblical foundation that God creates people as a demonstration of His glory, Platt explained that such a foundation’s cultural implication is that Christians must fight against abortion. Citing statistics indicating that there are 130,000 abortions around the world every day, Platt said, “I do not believe it is an overstatement to call abortion a modern holocaust.”

The second biblical foundation is that God designs people for the display of His gospel, the implication being that Christians must flee sexual immorality and defend sexual complementarity within marriage for the sake of the Gospel.

“This is one of those areas in our day where the word of God comes up totally against the patterns of our culture,” Platt said, “and we’re forced to make a decision: are we going to believe the Bible or not? Are we going to trust God who says we all have personal worth, are made in His image, and yet have different roles in a way that does not devalue worth but actually exalts worth?”

The third biblical foundation is that God judges people by His righteous law. The implication, then, is that Christians must work for justice in the world as they speak about the Judge of the world. Platt said Christians need to open their eyes to the desperate poverty and gross injustice in the world.

The final biblical foundation is that God pursues people with His redeeming love. The implication is that Christians must give their lives and lead their churches to pursue the 6,000 people groups still unreached by God’s redeeming love.

“When our time is done,” Platt said, “may it be said of you and me that we loved our Lord and led His church for the demonstration of His glory and the display of His Gospel amongst the most pressing issues of our day, including those people who’ve never even heard the Gospel.”

  • Standing on the Inside!

    BIBLE MEDITATION:
“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry…” 1 Samuel 15:23

    DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
There is a classic story about a father who told his little four year old son to sit down, but the son didn’t sit down. So the father said a second time, “Son, I said sit down.” The boy still didn’t sit down. Finally, the father took him by the shoulders and forcefully placed him in the chair. He said, “Now, Son, sit there!” The little boy answered, “Okay, I may be sitting down but—” he added defiantly, “I’m standing up on the inside!”

A lot of us are in that mode. A rebellious spirit is not always discernible except to God and the person who has it.

    ACTION POINT:
Is there some area in your life where you’re “standing up on the inside”? If on the inside you still harbor a rebellious spirit, you are not really “obeying.”

  • Bitterness!

    BIBLE MEDITATION:
“And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice.” Ephesians 4:30-31

    DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Bitterness creates a climate for the devil. Did you know the devil is bitter? In Revelation 12:17, you find the devil pursuing the nation Israel—the dragon pursuing after the woman. The devil has bitterness, a vendetta against God’s holy people, and he is pursuing. He’s trying somehow, someway, to hurt them.

I’ve seen some Christians with bitterness in their hearts. I don’t know where they got it. Evidently someone hurt them. But the real problem is, there’s a root of bitterness down there in their heart, and they’re like the devil.

    ACTION POINT:
Are you bitter? If so, in that regard, you are like the devil. If you’re not careful, before long you’re going to be full of the devil. Don’t let another day go by without bringing that bitterness to God and asking Him to help you release it.

  • Revive Us Again!

    BIBLE MEDITATION:
“Wilt thou not revive us again: that Thy people may rejoice in Thee?” Psalm 85:6

    DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
What we need in America is a sweeping revival. They tell us that a nation’s decay occurs in nine cycles.

    1. People go from bondage to spiritual faith.
    2. From spiritual faith to courage.
    3. From courage to liberty.
    4. From liberty to abundance.
    5. From abundance to selfishness.
    6. From selfishness to complacency.
    7. From complacency to apathy.
    8. From apathy to dependence.
    9. From dependence back again to bondage.

    ACTION POINT:
This cycle is being revealed today in our nation’s current status. But I’m telling you, it is time some of us took our place and prayed for God to send a mighty revival and for our nation to return to Him. It’s not too late with God!

  • The King’s Table!

    BIBLE MEDITATION:
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20

    DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
A man once told me, “Back in the depression, we had three meals a day. We had oatmeal for breakfast, corn meal for dinner, and no meal for supper.”

You may feel like that. You may not feel as if you have much now. But I don’t care what is set on your table today. Friend, listen, when you become a Christian, whether or not you have a freezer full of filet mignon, it makes no difference. There’s Someone else Who prepares a table before you in the presence of your enemies, and He is the Lord Jesus Christ. As a Christian, you eat at the King’s table.

    ACTION POINT:
If you have opened the door to Him, you feast in Him. You are in the Lord’s fellowship! You sit at His table! And no matter how poor you are, you eat with the King! Open your heart’s door to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • The Answer to All Our Problems!

    BIBLE MEDITATION:
“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:18

    DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
I once met a lawyer on an airplane. We began to talk about what we liked to read. I said, “I read newspapers, books, journals, devotional studies, but primarily the Bible.”

He said, “If you don’t read any further than that, how do you know what to talk about when you speak to people?”

I said, “Sir, man only has three problems: sin, sorrow, and death.”

He answered, “There are more than that.”

    I replied, “No, only three.”

“Oh,” he said, “there are other problems.”

I said, “All right, tell me another.”

He went off for a while, came back, and said, “Man only has three problems.”

That’s true. And the cross of Jesus Christ is the only answer to those three problems. You give me all of the wisdom of this world….but there is no other answer apart from the cross.

    ACTION POINT:
The Jews want a sign; it is the Cross. The Greeks want wisdom; it is the Cross. To this world it is foolishness, but to God it is not foolishness. Now, thank God for the message of the Cross.

  • The Value of Wisdom!

    BIBLE MEDITATION:
“How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!” Proverbs 16:16

    DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
I was interested to note in the newspaper that several billion dollars was moved from one bank to another—7.5 billion dollars to be exact. And there to watch and protect was an army of one hundred policeman and guards—all with their machine guns, tear gas, and all forms of electronic communications—because, of course, everybody wants money, don’t they? People would do anything to get their hands on that money.

I wonder, if they had had a truckload of wisdom going down the street, how many policemen do you think they would have needed to guard it?

    ACTION POINT:
It will be a great day in your life when you begin to seek after wisdom with the same intensity and commitment as you seek after gold.

PLEASE REMEMBER JERUSALEM AND ISRAEL!

  • Unchanged!

    BIBLE MEDITATION:
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” James 1:22-25

    DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
James gives this description of a man who hears the Word but doesn’t practice it. He says you are like a person who wakes up in the morning and his beard is grown out, his hair is tousled, he has bags under his eyes, and he’s still got soup on his mustache from last night! He glances in the mirror, sees he needs to put his face in shape, but he just goes his way and goes off to work! He forgets what he saw in the mirror. There’s no change—no bathing, no shaving, no combing. He’s just like he was! He glanced in the mirror, saw it, and forgot it.

Notice this verse says one person “observes”—and soon forgets. The other “looks into” and continues—he obeys the Word of God. “Beholding” or “observing” means a casual glance. “Looking into” means a careful gaze. It’s the same word used when the disciples raced to the empty tomb, and bending over, they peer into the darkness intently, with eyes set, searching, trying to see everything that they can see. It means to look steadfastly.

    ACTION POINT:
That’s the way you’re to look into the Word of God. Not just a casual glance but a steadfast, careful, gazing into the Word and a careful examination of the Word. Look into it, pick it up, read it, study it, scrutinize it.

  • The Simple-Minded!

    BIBLE MEDITATION:
“How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?”Proverbs 1:22

    DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
A Greek named Demosthenes was once addressing a bored and listless audience, so he told them a story.

“Once there was a man struggling with a great load. Along came another man with a donkey and said, ‘Rent my donkey, and he’ll carry your load.’ He did. Later, as they tried to find relief from the hot sun, they began to argue over who owned the donkey’s shade.”

At this point, Demosthenes walked off the stage. The audience became agitated, wanting to know how the argument was resolved. Demosthenes returned and said, “Earlier, I was talking about issues of life and death, and you were bored. But now you’re all worked up about who owns the shade of a donkey!”

    ACTION POINT:
Demosthenes’ audience was a simple-minded bunch. They tuned out issues of serious truth but were entranced with the trivial. How about you?

  • The Eye of a Needle!

    BIBLE MEDITATION:
“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.” Mark 10:25

    DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Around the walls of Jerusalem and other Bible-era cities, they had little low gates to keep people from riding through the streets of the city at night. A man could get through, but the animals couldn’t. These little gates were called “The Eye of a Needle.”

Now, a camel could possibly have gotten through one of these gates, but it would have been next to impossible. He would have had to get down on his knees and have his entire load taken off his back.

    ACTION POINT:
The reason it’s so difficult for a rich man to get to heaven is that he, along with us all, has to get down low (humble himself) like that camel and get that burden off his back. Trusting in Christ alone is the only way.

    BIBLE MEDITATION:
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”2 Corinthians 5:17

    DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
When I first got saved, I learned about Jesus in the Bible, and that was wonderful to me. And then as I began to live the Christian life, I would see what Jesus would do in the lives of other people, and I saw Jesus in history and Jesus in action, and that was wonderful. And then as I studied more, I began to learn about Jesus in heaven, ruling and reigning from His throne, and that was wonderful.

But I’ve learned a great truth, and that is that Jesus is in the Bible, and Jesus is in history, and Jesus is in heaven, but—here’s the great truth—Christ lives in me. He has possessed me. I am His purchased possession, and therefore, I am under new management.

    ACTION POINT:
If you have made Jesus your Lord and Savior, He lives within you. You can rejoice today with the apostle Paul who said, “To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
