Are You Really Just a “Practical Atheist”?

“Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the Lord would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.” 2 Kings 7:2

This man, this government official, acted like he believed in God, but he was a practical atheist. He spoke of God but doubted His power. To me the biggest fool is not the man who says there is no God, but the man who says there is a God and then doesn’t live like it. Here was a man who had a sterile religion. He believed in God in a way. He had a form of godliness, but he denied the power thereof. And he was the loser. He was robbed by the thief of unbelief. I want you to see what the man of God said to him. “Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not eat thereof.”

Unbelief always withholds God’s blessings from us. When we say we believe but act as though God is not in the equation–we are practical atheists. “…for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.”

(Hebrews 11:6)

So he said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Peter had a little faith in the midst of his doubts, says Bunyan; and so with crying and coming he was brought to Christ.

But here you see that sight was a hindrance; the waves were none of his business when once he had set out; all Peter had any concern with, was the pathway of light that came gleaming across the darkness from where Christ stood. If it was tenfold Egypt beyond that, Peter had no call to look and see.

When the Lord shall call to you over the waters, “Come,” step gladly forth. Look not for a moment away from Him.

Not by measuring the waves can you prevail; not by gauging the wind will you grow strong; to scan the danger may be to fall before it; to pause at the difficulties, is to have them break above your head. Lift up your eyes unto the hills, and go forward–there is no other way.

“Dost thou fear to launch away?
Faith lets go to swim!
Never will He let thee go;
’Tis by trusting thou shalt know
Fellowship with Him.”

Do Not Fear Those Who Can Kill Only the Body

What if someone broke into your house and threatened to kill you? How do you think you or I might react?

What if you were about to be killed because of your faith in Christ? What do you think you would say or do?

Or what if the fears of some came true, and the nuclear bombs began to fall? How do you think we would respond? Does the Bible have anything to say to us about such horrible and catastrophic events?

Earlier this week I read a scripture in which Jesus specifically addresses such fears. (I had not read it in a while, and it got my attention precisely because I myself have feared the kinds of things I just mentioned.) Jesus said, “And do not fear those who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can kill both body and soul in hell.” (Matthew 10:28).

These words of Jesus are sobering to say the least. But they are also comforting!

Imagine you were a Christian in a part of the world where some people wanted to kill you just because you believed Jesus is the Son of God. Your potential persecutors would of course want you to fear them, but would they have ever heard this verse where Jesus says not to fear those who can kill only the body but instead to fear only Him who can destroy both body and soul in hell? (Then your persecutors would be the ones who should be afraid for what they are about to do!)

Persecution, and even being killed for our faith, can happen in America. Christians have been shot in church worshipping God. It happened at Mother Emmanuel Church in Charleston, S.C. and at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, TX. Be honest. Have you feared that? Could such a fear keep you from going to church? Jesus says that a crazy shooter could kill your body but not your soul, and for that reason you should not fear such a person! He says you and I should fear only the One who can destroy both body and soul in hell.

1 Thessalonians 5:6
Let us not sleep, as do others.

There are many ways of promoting Christian wakefulness. Among the rest, let me strongly advise Christians to converse together concerning the ways of the Lord. Christian and Hopeful, as they journeyed towards the Celestial City, said to themselves, “To prevent drowsiness in this place, let us fall into good discourse.” Christian enquired, “Brother, where shall we begin?” And Hopeful answered, “Where God began with us.” Then Christian sang this song-

“When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;
Yea, let them learn of them, in any wise,
Thus to keep open their drowsy slumb’ring eyes.
Saints’ fellowship, if it be managed well,
Keeps them awake, and that in spite of hell.”

Christians who isolate themselves and walk alone, are very liable to grow drowsy. Hold Christian company, and you will be kept wakeful by it, and refreshed and encouraged to make quicker progress in the road to heaven. But as you thus take “sweet counsel” with others in the ways of God, take care that the theme of your converse is the Lord Jesus. Let the eye of faith be constantly looking unto Him; let your heart be full of Him; let your lips speak of His worth. Friend, live near to the cross, and thou wilt not sleep. Labour to impress thyself with a deep sense of the value of the place to which thou art going. If thou rememberest that thou art going to heaven, thou wilt not sleep on the road. If thou thinkest that hell is behind thee, and the devil pursuing thee, thou wilt not loiter. Would the manslayer sleep with the avenger of blood behind him, and the city of refuge before him? Christian, wilt thou sleep whilst the pearly gates are open-the songs of angels waiting for thee to join them-a crown of gold ready for thy brow? Ah! no; in holy fellowship continue to watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation.

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

God continues to bless Sagemont Church. In the last two Sundays, over 100 people have made public decisions to make Jesus Christ Lord of their life. Pastors Chuck Schneider, Stuart Rothberg, and Jim Hastings have been teaching the scriptures as both the Old and New Testaments prophesy and proclaim that Jesus Christ is coming back to this earth again to claim and receive His children unto Himself. During the worship services, I am preaching the message and promise of the return of Christ.

One may ask, “Pastor, why do you passionately believe that Jesus is literally going to return to the earth?” These are a few reasons:

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

Jesus said He would! John 14:3 “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
The entire Christian view of history demands it.
The prophetic signs found in scripture are now clearly being fulfilled.

Earthquakes all over the globe. Matthew 24:7 – (over 20,000 since 1971)
Hearts will fail for fear. Luke 21:26 – Suicides are epidemic.
Great explosions of learning. II Timothy 3:7 – People cannot discern the truth.
Immorality abounds. Luke 17:26-27 – Like the days of Noah.

Scripture clearly teaches that Jesus will come to save His children and judge the rest.

God and Churchill

godchurchill I have just completed reading one of the best books that I have read in the last twenty years. God and Churchill, written by one of our newest Sagemont members Jonathan Sandys (pronounced “sands”), great-grandson of Sir Winston Churchill. Wallace Henley, staff member at Second Baptist Church, Houston, assisted Jonathan in this profound book. The purpose of the book is to make clear “how the great leader’s sense of divine destiny changed his troubled world and offers help for ours.” Tyndale Momentum is the publisher. The book has many profound quotes. However, there is one that has impacted my life more than many others. Prime Minister of Great Britain, Margaret Thatcher, addressing the Church of Scotland General Assembly in 1988, said “I think back to many discussions in my early life when we all agreed that if you try to take the fruits of Christianity without its roots, the fruits will wither. And they will not come back unless you nurture the roots.”

One of the responsibilities of the Bride of Christ, the Church, is to keep Christianity on track and prevent the derailing of His ultimate purpose. The paganism that is engulfing us today will ultimately destroy us unless we return to the roots of our faith. “Our faith is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.” It is on the solid rock we must stand for truly all other ground is sinking sand.

Can God Lie?

“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.”

Titus 1:2

We speak of the Bible as inerrant and infallible. But is it really important that we believe that the Word of God is true and perfect?

Yes. If any part of His Word is not true, then we must conclude that God is a liar. But God cannot lie! Every word in the Bible can be relied upon. Billy Graham came to this conclusion in the early years of his ministry and prayed, “I have seen enough of the transforming power of this Word to know that You are behind it…. I take it by faith…and trust You to make clear to me what it means.”

F. B. Myer, one of the greatest devotional writers of all time, said if any promise of God should fail, “the heavens will clothe themselves in sackcloth, and the sun and moon and stars will reel from their seats, the universe will rock, and a hollow wind moan through creation, bearing the tidings that God is mutable, that God can lie.”

A God of truth cannot inspire untruth. Praise God for His absolute trustworthiness.

Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers all transgressions.

(Prov 10:12)

Rehearse your troubles to God only. Not long ago I read in a paper a bit of personal experience from a precious child of God, and it made such an impression upon me that I record it here. She wrote:

“I found myself one midnight wholly sleepless as the surges of a cruel injustice swept over me, and the love which covers seemed to have crept out of my heart. Then I cried to God in an agony for the power to obey His injunction, ’Love covereth.’

“Immediately the Spirit began to work in me the power that brought about the forgetfulness.

“Mentally I dug a grave. Deliberately I threw up the earth until the excavation was deep.

“Sorrowfully I lowered into it the thing which wounded me. Quickly I shoveled in the clods.

“Over the mound I carefully laid the green sods. Then I covered it with white roses and forget-me-nots, and quickly walked away.

“Sweet sleep came. The wound which had been so nearly deadly was healed without a scar, and I know not today what caused my grief.”

“There was a scar on yonder mountain-side,
Gashed out where once the cruel storm had trod;
A barren, desolate chasm, reaching wide,
Across the soft green sod.

“But years crept by beneath the purple pines,
And veiled the scar with grass and moss once more,

Got Some Weird Cravings?

A depraved diet marked this tragic season of famine in Israel. A depraved diet is the mark in our day. The only difference is that ours is a spiritual famine.

Today we’re feeding on all sorts of depravity and filth. Do you know why pornography is read by so many? Why night clubs are filled? Why there’s an opioid epidemic? Because there’s a famine for the Word of God. Anytime a person isn’t properly fed, they’ll resort to feasting on a donkey’s head.

How do you change your diet, your cravings? Not by saying, “I’m going to be a good boy.” Rather, by loading up on the Word of God–diving in, meditating upon it, filling your spirit from His bounty, so you’ll not be hungry for that which corrupts yet doesn’t satisfy.

When we are in doubt or difficulty, when many voices urge this course or the other, when prudence utters one advice and faith another, then let us be still, hushing each intruder, calming ourselves in the sacred hush of God’s presence; let us study His Word in the attitude of devout attention; let us lift up our nature into the pure light of His face, eager only to know what God the Lord shall determine—and ere long a very distinct impression will be made, the unmistakable forth-telling of His secret counsel.

It is not wise in the earlier stages of Christian life to depend on this alone, but to wait for the corroboration of circumstances. But those who have had many dealings with God know well the value of secret fellowship with Him, to ascertain His will.

Are you in difficulty about your way? Go to God with your question; get direction from the light of His smile or the cloud of His refusal.

If you will only get alone, where the lights and shadows of earth cannot interfere, where human opinions fail to reach and if you will dare to wait there silent and expectant, though all around you insist on immediate decision or action—the will of God will be made clear; and you will have a new conception of God, a deeper insight into His nature and heart of love, which shall be for yourself alone a rapturous experience, to abide your precious perquisite forever, the rich guerdon of those long waiting hours.

What if someone broke into your house and threatened to kill you? How do you think you or I might react?

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

One may ask, “Pastor, why do you passionately believe that Jesus is literally going to return to the earth?” These are a few reasons:

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

Jesus said He would! John 14:3 “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
The entire Christian view of history demands it.
The prophetic signs found in scripture are now clearly being fulfilled.

Earthquakes all over the globe. Matthew 24:7 – (over 20,000 since 1971)
Hearts will fail for fear. Luke 21:26 – Suicides are epidemic.
Great explosions of learning. II Timothy 3:7 – People cannot discern the truth.
Immorality abounds. Luke 17:26-27 – Like the days of Noah.

Scripture clearly teaches that Jesus will come to save His children and judge the rest.

What Does “Deny Myself” Mean?

“Then said Jesus unto His disciples, If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”

Do you want to be filled with Spirit of God? Do you really? Are you willing to forsake self? God is not going to superimpose His mighty, dynamic power on your old self-life.

Some people think denying themselves is doing without certain kinds of food, going without sleep, or doing without certain pleasures. They think maybe if they go live in a monastery they’ll be denying themselves.

But Jesus didn’t say deny yourself things. It‘s not denying yourself things; it’s denying yourself. Simon Peter forsook his nets early on, but it was a long time before Simon Peter forsook Simon Peter.

Are you ready now to take Self off the throne and enthrone Jesus there instead? Are you ready to say, “None of me and all of Thee”?

Can We Just Call It What It Is?

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us … If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”

1 John 1:8, 10

Today we’ve almost done away with the idea of sin. Our culture rejects sin as old-fashioned, so we’ve taken away the word sin and replaced it with new words in our vocabulary.

Some of these high‑sounding phrases are: error, mistake, misjudgment, weakness, psychological maladjustment, glandular malfunction, and a stumble upward–anything but sin.

We’ve gone through the medicine cabinet and put new labels on old bottles of poison. So we have new terminology. We’ve tried to change things, but they’ve not really been changed at all. We have some egg-headed people–with all of their learnedness and intelligence–who have said “sin” is out of date. But nothing’s changed except how we see ourselves. We’re lying to ourselves and to a holy God.

Take inventory. Are you seeing your sin and dealing with it humbly and honestly before the Lord? Do you remember the father and the Prodigal Son? Our Father is full of mercy, long-suffering and ready to embrace you. He loves you.

Therefore, strengthen your listless hands and your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but be healed.

This is God’s word of encouragement to us to lift up the hands of faith, and confirm the knees of prayer. Often our faith grows tired, languid, and relaxed, and our prayers lose their force and effectiveness.

The figure used here is a very striking one. The idea seems to be that we become discouraged and so timid that a little obstacle depresses and frightens us, and we are tempted to walk around it, and not face it: to take the easier way.

Perhaps it is some physical trouble that God is ready to heal, but the exertion is hard, or it is easier to secure some human help, or walk around in some other way.

There are many ways of walking around emergencies instead of going straight through them. How often we come up against something that appalls us, and we want to evade the issue with the excuse:

“I am not quite ready for that now.” Some sacrifice is to be made, some obedience demanded, some Jericho to be taken, some soul that we have not the courage to claim and carry through, some prayer that is hanging fire, or perhaps some physical trouble that is half healed and we are walking around it.

God says, “Lift up the hands that hang down.” March straight through the flood, and lo, the waters will divide, the Red Sea will open, the Jordan will part, and the Lord will lead you through to victory.

Don’t let your feet “be turned out of the way,” but let your body “be healed,” your faith strengthened. Go right ahead and leave no Jericho behind you unconquered and no place where Satan can say that he was too much for you. This is a profitable lesson and an intensely practical one. How often have we been in that place. Perhaps you are there today. ”

What if someone broke into your house and threatened to kill you? How do you think you or I might react?

What if you were about to be killed because of your faith in Christ? What do you think you would say or do?

Or what if the fears of some came true, and the nuclear bombs began to fall? How do you think we would respond? Does the Bible have anything to say to us about such horrible and catastrophic events?

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

One may ask, “Pastor, why do you passionately believe that Jesus is literally going to return to the earth?” These are a few reasons:

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

Jesus said He would! John 14:3 “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
The entire Christian view of history demands it.
The prophetic signs found in scripture are now clearly being fulfilled.

Earthquakes all over the globe. Matthew 24:7 – (over 20,000 since 1971)
Hearts will fail for fear. Luke 21:26 – Suicides are epidemic.
Great explosions of learning. II Timothy 3:7 – People cannot discern the truth.
Immorality abounds. Luke 17:26-27 – Like the days of Noah.

Scripture clearly teaches that Jesus will come to save His children and judge the rest.

What God Wants Most on Father’s Day!

“Glory and honor are in His presence; strength and gladness are in His place.” 1 Chronicles 16:27

I heard about a little girl who loved her daddy so much she wanted to do something special for him for Christmas. She decided to make him some slippers. She went up to her bedroom every evening and worked. The times that she used to sit in her father’s lap and talk disappeared. For days she worked alone. Finally, she came down on Christmas Day and presented the slippers to her father.

He was appreciative of her nice gift. But he thought to himself, “How much more I would have valued her time just sitting in my lap and being with me than I value these slippers.”

Are you occupied elsewhere doing things “for” God, rather than spending time with Him? Jesus values the time you spend with Him far more than the things you do for Him.

Our too general neglect of looking for answers to what we ask, shows how little we are in earnest in our petitions. A husbandman is not content without the harvest; a marksman will observe whether the ball hits the target; a physician watches the effect of the medicine which he gives; and shall the Christian be careless about the effect of his labor?

Every prayer of the Christian, made in faith, according to the will of God, for which God has promised, offered up in the name of Jesus Christ, and under the influence of the Spirit, whether for temporal or for spiritual blessings, is, or will be, fully answered.

God always answers the general design and intention of His people’s prayers, in doing that which, all things considered, is most for His own glory and their spiritual and eternal welfare. As we never find that Jesus Christ rejected a single supplicant who came to Him for mercy, so we believe that no prayer made in His name will be in vain.

The answer to prayer may be approaching, though we discern not its coming. The seed that lies under ground in winter is taking root in order to a spring and harvest, though it appears not above ground, but seems dead and lost.

Dad’s and Father’s Day: What You Should Know!

“Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labor of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord. The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life. Yea, and thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Jerusalem.”

I am convinced that America’s families will not be changed until the dads in America are changed. The key is the father. God has given us a survival manual, and it begins with the father. He is to be a God-fearing, hard-working, worshipping man of God. He is to be bold, but he must also truly fear God.

What is the fear of God? Not a cringing dread of God, but love on its knees. And I am convinced that the man who fears God the most loves God the best.

Dads, your children need to see the fear of God in your life. I’ve made an observation of fathers. Do you know what makes a good dad? He is a man who is both strong and tender at the same time. Strong, but not afraid to hug, to kiss, to love, to speak softly and gently to the children.

These children of yours are like olive plants round about your table. Dads, if you will do this, if you will put the emphasis upon your family, we are going to see good in this nation again.

He named the second child Ephraim, saying, “Certainly God has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering.

The summer showers are falling. The poet stands by the window watching them. They are beating and buffeting the earth with their fierce downpour. But the poet sees in his imaginings more than the showers which are falling before his eyes. He sees myriads of lovely flowers which shall be soon breaking forth from the watered earth, filling it with matchless beauty and fragrance. And so he sings:

“It isn’t raining rain for me, it’s raining daffodils;
In every dimpling drop I see wild flowers upon the hills.
A cloud of gray engulfs the day, and overwhelms the town;
It isn’t raining rain for me: it’s raining roses down.”

Perchance some one of God’s chastened children is even now saying, “O God, it is raining hard for me tonight.

“Testings are raining upon me which seem beyond my power to endure. Disappointments are raining fast, to the utter defeat of all my chosen plans. Bereavements are raining into my life which are making my shrinking heart quiver in its intensity of suffering. The rain of affliction is surely beating down upon my soul these days.”

Withal, friend, you are mistaken. It isn’t raining rain for you. It’s raining blessing. For, if you will but believe your Father’s Word, under that beating rain are springing up spiritual flowers of such fragrance and beauty as never before grew in that stormless, unchastened life of yours.

You indeed see the rain. But do you see also the flowers? You are pained by the testings. But God sees the sweet flower of faith which is upspringing in your life under those very trials.

You shrink from the suffering. But God sees the tender compassion for other sufferers which is finding birth in your soul.

Your heart winces under the sore bereavement. But God sees the deepening and enriching which that sorrow has brought to you.

It isn’t raining afflictions for you. It is raining tenderness, love, compassion, patience, and a thousand other flowers and fruits of the blessed Spirit, which are bringing into your life such a spiritual enrichment as all the fullness of worldly prosperity and ease was never able to beget in your innermost soul.

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

One may ask, “Pastor, why do you passionately believe that Jesus is literally going to return to the earth?” These are a few reasons:

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

Jesus said He would! John 14:3 “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
The entire Christian view of history demands it.
The prophetic signs found in scripture are now clearly being fulfilled.

Earthquakes all over the globe. Matthew 24:7 – (over 20,000 since 1971)
Hearts will fail for fear. Luke 21:26 – Suicides are epidemic.
Great explosions of learning. II Timothy 3:7 – People cannot discern the truth.
Immorality abounds. Luke 17:26-27 – Like the days of Noah.

Scripture clearly teaches that Jesus will come to save His children and judge the rest.

The Greatest Secret to Victorious Living Is…

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, Who loved me, and gave Himself for me.”

Galatians 2:20

The greatest secret I know about living a victorious life is this: Holiness is not the way to Christ–Christ is the way to holiness.

We think, “If I could pray enough, live purely enough, study my Bible enough, or get my life holy enough, that would bring me closer to Jesus.That would bring me into a relationship with Him.”

But not so! It is Jesus Christ Who enables you to pray. It is Jesus Christ Who enables you to study the Bible. It is Jesus Christ Who enables you to live the pure life. Holiness is not the way to Christ–Christ is the way to holiness.

We can never work ourselves into being “holy enough” to qualify for closeness with Jesus! Just as Elisha was identified with Elijah, so you must be identified with the Lord Jesus Christ. It happens in relationship–you must spend time with Him. We become like who we spend time with.

Christian, take good care of thy faith, for recollect that faith is the only means whereby thou canst obtain blessings. Prayer cannot draw down answers from God’s throne except it be the earnest prayer of the man who believes.

Faith is the telegraphic wire which links earth to Heaven, on which God’s messages of love fly so fast that before we call He answers, and while we are yet speaking He hears us. But if that telegraphic wire of faith be snapped, how can we obtain the promise?

Am I in trouble? I can obtain help for trouble by faith. Am I beaten about by the enemy? My soul on her dear Refuge leans by faith.

But take faith away, then in vain I call to God. There is no other road betwixt my soul and Heaven. Blockade the road, and how can I communicate with the Great King?

Faith links me with Divinity. Faith clothes me with the power of Jehovah. Faith insures every attribute of God in my defense. It helps me to defy the hosts of hell. It makes me march triumphant over the necks of my enemies. But without faith how can I receive anything from the Lord?

Oh, then, Christian, watch well thy faith. “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”

Are You Blaming Others?

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”

Romans 5:12

Some would say man is just the sum total of his environment and his body chemistry. If he does wrong, it’s because he’s like a computer that’s been wrongly programmed. If he was raised in a bad neighborhood, he shouldn’t be blamed for breaking into stores or smoking dope. Or if he has a vile temper, perhaps he had an overbearing mother.

According to psychologists, these unfortunate souls may be pitied but not blamed. They may be sick, but they’re not sinful. They may be weak but not wicked. They need guidance but not salvation. But these social evaluators are wrong!

Are you blaming others? Or taking responsibility and coming to the Cross? Let me sum it up this way: life is short; death is sure; sin is the cause; and Christ is the cure.

Two painters each painted a picture to illustrate his conception of rest. The first chose for his scene a still, lone lake among the far-off mountains.

The second threw on his canvas a thundering waterfall, with a fragile birch tree bending over the foam; and at the fork of the branch, almost wet with the cataract’s spray, sat a robin on its nest.

The first was only stagnation; the last was rest.

Christ’s life outwardly was one of the most troubled lives that ever lived: tempest and tumult, tumult and tempest, the waves breaking over it all the time until the worn body was laid in the grave. But the inner life was a sea of glass. The great calm was always there.

At any moment you might have gone to Him and found rest. And even when the human bloodhounds were dogging Him in the streets of Jerusalem, He turned to His disciples and offered them, as a last legacy, “My peace.”

Rest is not a hallowed feeling that comes over us in church; it is the repose of a heart set deep in God.

What if someone broke into your house and threatened to kill you? How do you think you or I might react?

What if you were about to be killed because of your faith in Christ? What do you think you would say or do?

Or what if the fears of some came true, and the nuclear bombs began to fall? How do you think we would respond? Does the Bible have anything to say to us about such horrible and catastrophic events?

These words of Jesus are sobering to say the least. But they are also comforting!

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

One may ask, “Pastor, why do you passionately believe that Jesus is literally going to return to the earth?” These are a few reasons:

Why I Believe in the Return of Christ

Jesus said He would! John 14:3 “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
The entire Christian view of history demands it.
The prophetic signs found in scripture are now clearly being fulfilled.

Earthquakes all over the globe. Matthew 24:7 – (over 20,000 since 1971)
Hearts will fail for fear. Luke 21:26 – Suicides are epidemic.
Great explosions of learning. II Timothy 3:7 – People cannot discern the truth.
Immorality abounds. Luke 17:26-27 – Like the days of Noah.

Scripture clearly teaches that Jesus will come to save His children and judge the rest.

Are You Facing a Questionable Choice?

“… for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.” Romans 14:23

A man was in the back bedroom getting dressed. His wife was out in the living room talking with a friend. He yelled out, “Is this shirt clean enough for me to wear?” Without hesitation, she said “no” and went on talking.

After a while, he came out, buttoning up another shirt, and asked, “How did you know that shirt wasn’t clean without looking at it?” She said, “If you had to ask, it wasn’t.”

Many times we wonder whether a course of action is right or wrong. We’re not quite sure, so since we don’t know absolutely that it’s wrong, we do it anyway. But if we think it may be wrong, we should leave it alone until we’re sure that it’s right.

The old adage “When in doubt, don’t” is a good course to follow. When faced with a choice, ask: “Will this gladden the heart of God or grieve Him? Pray today: “Lord, I want my heart to be grieved by those things that grieve Your heart and be gladdened with the things that give You joy.”

Have you ever seen men and women whom some disaster drove to a great act of prayer, and by and by the disaster was forgotten, but the sweetness of religion remained and warmed their souls?

So have I seen a storm in later spring; and all was black, save where the lightning tore the cloud with thundering rent.

The winds blew and the rains fell, as though heaven had opened its windows. What a devastation there was! Not a spider’s web that was out of doors escaped the storm, which tore up even the strong-branched oak.

But ere long the lightning had gone by, the thunder was spent and silent, the rain was over, the western wind came up with its sweet breath, the clouds were chased away, and the retreating storm threw a scarf of rainbows over her fair shoulders and resplendent neck, and looked back and smiled, and so withdrew and passed out of sight.

But for weeks long the fields held up their bands full of ambrosial flowers, and all the summer through the grass was greener, the brooks were fuller, and the trees cast a more umbrageous shade, because the storm passed by–though all the rest of the earth had long ago forgotten the storm, its rainbows and its rain.
